What is the style of hat shown in the avatars of Indycop and RBH (and possibly others)?
Are they "just" fedoras or are thay a particular style/version?
That is the type I have my sights set on and I'd like to narrow my search a bit.
Who are the various manufacturers of this type of lid?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are referring to Indy-style fedoras. The hat in indycop's avatar is, I believe, an Adventurebilt (sometimes called a "Fortune & Glory"), made by Steve Delk.

Delk and his associate Marc Kitter together make up the Adventurebilt Hat Company (ooh just looked and found their new website. Nice!)

You will see from their site that their hats are very nice - not to mention the official hatters of Indiana Jones IV - but also a little more pricey. Understandably for their reputation, the waiting list is also fairly lengthy; I ordered mine in August but can't expect the hat until well into 2008.

If you are after a hat in a roughly similar style, you might also consider a Federation or Federation Deluxe, both made by Akubra, and available from HatsDirect in Australia. You will find them to be perfectly serviceable hats, running at around the hundred dollar mark.

I think the hat in RBH's avatar might be his Akubra Campdraft, but don't quote me on that one.

Hope that is of some help. Welcome to the lounge.

Welcome to the Lounge Bassman, glad to have ya here!

The hat in my avatar is my Akubra Campdraft. According to most of the websites where you can order a Campdraft it is considered to be a Country Style Hat. That type style is what appealed to me at first. It also has close association to the Stetson Open Road and looks much like a vintage Stetson Stratoliner [among other thin ribbon fedoras of bygone times].
The Campdraft is one of a very few production hats [factory made] that come open crowned. That means you can easily shape the crown to your taste. Teardrop, C-crown and diamond crease are just a few of the styles that can be put into an open crowned hat. And I might add it is very easy to shape a fedora, and the Akubras are a tough hat and normal creasing will cause them no damage.
Here is where I bought myAkubra Campdraft not to push any one seller as in another recent thread I believe someone said they found a Campdraft elswhere a little cheaper.
Hope this helped you and if I can help further I will try.

I do have a few Indy style fedoras.

Fatwoul is right!:D

Bassman is it the color you like or the tall crown , wide brim type? There is a ton of options for either. RBH has a good collection of both.:)

Thanks very much for the replies gents.

fatwoul- Thanks for the links. The Adventurebuilts are gorgeous, but beyond my price range at this time.
The Akubras are very nice looking and I can afford those. Since the 3 styles are so similar (to my eye), I guess the difference is the material.

RBH- The Camdraft sure looks different on it's webpage than in your avatar.
If that's the same hat, you did a beautiful job shaping it! Also an affordable, sharp looking lid.

indycop- I prefer the dark brown color and contrasting color wide ribbon like yours. It figures the one I like best is the one that's out of reach. I do like the tall crown and the wide brim too.
The Campdraft's color, ribbon and bound edge are obvious but the Fed and Fed Deluxe look very similar to the Adventurebuilt to me. Can you guys point out any differences?

Thanks again for the help!

Ribbon and bound edge are the main difference, both have the wide[er] brim and high[er] crown.
For whats it is worth, you cant go worng with an Akubra.
[open crowned means that you shape it your self] the crown is 'rounded'.

My current avatar hat is the Akubra Federation, done in Indy style (more or less), in the tawny fawn color (call it "camel"...it's less confusing). The Federation was designed to be an Indy hat, though you can do it any way you wish.

Real good lookin' hat.

What justifies the price difference between the Fed and Fed Deluxe?

And...thank you GentlemanFarmer.

The deluxe has a slightly higher quality felt, but I've heard that it's a little fuzzier compared to the smooth regular Federation. To me, the deluxe isn't worth the extra $$. But that's just me.

I have to say that the Federation and the Peter Brothers are probably your best bet for the Indiana Jones style unless the Adventurebilt suddenly become affordably for you. Both are great, solid hats, and I recommend them.

The regular fed is not the same brown as the fed deluxe I believe, also the felt is supposed to be a little better quality in the deluxe. I can not attest to that as I only have the regular fed. But I do have the Peters bros. and an Adventurebilt. I am perfectly happy with the pb as I do not have to have a hat straight out of the movie. It is very well made and quite comfortable. The Adventurebilt is pure beaver and it shows. It is extremely well made and will last most people forever even under hard use.
Price wise the akubras win followed by the pb and then ab. But the more you pay the more hat you get!

Thanks for the encouragement Dee.
But I'll have to bash and pinch and shape this sucker. And it'll be a first time for me too. And then post a picture?:D
Well,...it wouldn't be the first time I embarrassed myself.;)
