Pinstripes - how bold?

A worsted chalk stripe. Much less "fuzzy" than the flannel. The slight fuzz effect is achieved by pairing two parallel broken stripes in side by side warp yarns. Up close, it looks like a dentation pattern.

Yep, the sleevehead is the upper part of the sleeve where it attaches to the coat body, and "rope" is the term for when it's slightly raised above the level of the shoulder line. Small amounts of rope can be achieved by pressing the inside seam allowance into the sleeve, and greater amounts usually involve a bit of wadding or padding sewn in.

Great! Thanks a lot! I love that look but didn't know what it was called!

I too, love pinstripes. When I was a kid, I called them "gangster" suits, and would make a "ratta-tat-tat" sound lol I kept asking my mom for a three-piece gangster suit, but I never did get one. I wonder why? [huh] :D
Get one now! There's few things hotter than a woman in a three piece suit.

Didn't Marlene D. wear one at one point? I know she wore tails, but I'm sure I've seen photos of her in three-piece, men's style lounge suits....

Indeed. I think her tailor (in the early part of her career at least) was Knize of Vienna.

:eek:fftopic:

The film museum in Berlin is well worth a visit for the collection of Marlene's costumes alone.... I gather it's moved from its original base in Potsdammer Platz since i was last there (2002 - must get back soon, I love that city), but they still have that collection. Apparently she kept all her costumes, they were left to someone, and eventually they were bequeathed to the museum. There's a feathered one, bright canary yellow, which is just unbelievable - for an era which so many of us (not being old enough to remember it) still tend ot think of in monchrome, it's incredible to see something so vividly coloured. Her white tails are beautiful as well - but my was she tiny!!

Christopher Walken, Michael Keaton, and Jim Carrey all must have had the same costumer designer. I want Jim Carrey's shirt, though.

The bold seems to really work well for this guy:

lol lol lol

I love that look, but I think that's definitely one for the zoots.... it's not the sort of stripe one could wear to the office / a funeral / a friend's wedding....!

I used to like that bold look a lot more ten years ago, maybe I've mellowed a little . . . It still has an appeal, for myself though I don't know quite where I would wear a suit like that!

For me, the danger is that it begins to look like a costume rather than an outfit.... fine with a zoot, but not the more subtle approach one wants when appearing more gentlemanly is key!
