Both are wonderful Spitty, the last one was used for one of the UK airshow posters.

Thanks for posting those!

Yes - it was Flying Legends 2010. I remember I asked here who did the painting, when the poster came out.
I should have known it was Alex Hamilton, having one of his (IMO) very best prints hanging right before my nose.

I remember seeing that on the wall of your office Søren, a simply fantastic print.

I've got my eyes on a new acquisition, a print of 64 Sqn's Spits about to engage a bomber formation ;)

Sounds great - by which artist?

Barry Weekley. I'm not even sure it's still available but I'm going to email him to see if I can get a copy. I really would like to have a print of 64 on the wall.

On a different note, the bloody glass on my Robert Taylor has cracked so have to take that up to the framers to be fixed.

Good find Spit! It is really beautiful, I had to look twice because
I first thought it was a photograph; It is very realistic! lol

I am 99% certain that he paints from modern photos of restored warbirds for some paintings and especially the first two posted.

The first painting that Søren posted clearly shows the wing strakes on the upper wing which you don't see on wartime operational aircraft but on post war restorations. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if that's been painted from a photo of P7350 of the BBMF.

I am pretty sure that all modern "WWII" artists use photographs to paint from - that's the only way. What else can they do?
That - and modelplanes.

I have some books with the famous Robert Taylor's artworks and sketches. There are several sketches that I recognice as photos, I have seen before.
(I might try to scan some of them and post the original photos side by side - if it's possible to find it again)
I also think it's perfectly OK to use photos as inspiration - there is still a lot of difference as to what the single artis gets out of it. Quality wise, that is.
And I think Alex Hamilton is one of the better ones.

Come to think of it - there also is a certain likenes to the famous WWII artist Frank Newbould in the second painting I posted - the one with the two Spits comming in to land. A homage if you will.

Inspirational- I'd assumed his work was digital but theni took a look at his website and saw the detail in his work on the servicing of a Lanc.

This is one of my humble studies for a piece I may attempt one day- purely digital just to quickly get an idea out and have it critiqued by a mate who flew these with 455Sqn. One day I hope to get it onto canvas.

Andrew that would look fantastic as a painting. I take it that's 455 up to mischief on the Norwegian coast eh ;)

Søren, great painting and it'll look great with your others.

the aviation artist of the first three images is Alex Hamilton, Google him for details and his site. He has won many aviation art awards. I own "Tally Ho!" its a great print. His latest Spitfire print is called "Stick to me like glue" and is one of the finest Spit images out there. My main hobby is aviation related artwork, with WWII flight jackets about equal (maybe a shade less, the jackets that is).
