I like the comparatively low crown on this one. Even with the bound brim, it gives it a bit of a casual look. Well, as casual as one can be wearing a fedora. I can already tell this will be one of my winter favorites. The felt is just firm enough to hold its shape, but not nearly as firm as the Cattleman and other outback Akubra hats. I had to use the flash because I don't have any bright rooms in the house at this time of day, but the color turned out very, very close.

Looks great!!! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
I should have two in the post from Hats Direct any time now ... had the "Stylemaster" in the cart, but (opposite of you) I switched to the "Fedora" at the last second just because it had a slightly larger crown. My head is, no doubt, fatter than yours;)

*edit* sorry, I spoke before I saw that you posted a "Fedora" also ... congrats!!! Hope I am as happy with mine (ordered the Fedora and a Federation) as you seem with yours!!! Great hats!

Another great looking hat, which you wear very well. Congratulations! I like the color. :eusa_clap Is that a hat that is in stock, or is there a waiting period like the Akubra Camp Draft?

Thanks! It's an indent. I ordered it from Aussie Bush Hats & Oilskins and it was a 3 month wait.

Very very good looking frdora you got yourself. Just another post showing what fine hats Akubra makes!
It looks great on you by the way.
My Campdraft was also a 3 month wait, from another seller too. I think that is the time it takes to get the hat made and shipped.

The way I heard it explained, the Akubra factory cycles through their entire range of models and colors over a three-month period, and squeezes special orders in the next time that the appropriate model/color is scheduled. So, unless a hat in the model/color you order is already sitting in stock with your dealer, there will be a delay when it's ordered from the factory. You could get lucky in the cycle, and your particular order could be made up right after your dealer's order gets in, or you could need to wait for the full three months. (Sometimes longer: I believe they close the factory for a whole month for the end-of-year holidays, when it's brutally hot to be working for hours with steaming equipment down under.)

This strategy allows Akubra, with only a modest sized factory and staff, to make quite a large range of hats. And as has been pointed out, they do it all in one location, starting from scratch with rabbit pelts. And has also been pointed out, with a fine quality/low price that's remarkable for manufacturing anything in today's world.

I ordered from Aussie Bush Hats and Oilskins twice: a Stockman in Glen Grey, a special order which took 11 weeks for them to get from the factory; and a Cattleman in Sand, an in-stock color which was delivered in less than two weeks from the order. (A few years back I also got a Federation from HatsDirect, which had a higher shipping cost, but arrived in about a week.)

Akubras are on my wants list for sure - I really like the looks of that grey Stylemaster - that's one i had marked out as a probably first one on my list, and those photos have confirmed it! I think in the future I'd also like a Federation and a regular Fedora.... I'd like a range of hats on different colours - black, navy, grey (light and dark). Seems relatively rare to see a navy Fedora which surprised me in a way, but then I guess between grey, black and brown you cover all bases... not everyone is as anal as I can be about totally colour coordinating your accessories!

Question re the Akubras: Hats Direct says the Fedora comes with a lapel cord, but makes no mention of this on any other model. Is that the case? Can lapel cords be bought elsewhere and attached, or are they something that have to be built in at time of hat manufacture? Speaking as a guy who very much prefers a wider (2 3/4"-3") brim, I'd be very keen to acquire some of these for windy days!

I honestly had no idea they've been around that long. Wow.

Since the '60s? In fact, Akubra has been around a lot longer than that. The actual hatmaking business that would become Akubra started in 1874, and the Akubra name was adopted in 1912. So, they've been around a loooooooong time.

Not so much Akubra the company as the Stylemaster model specifically...

I like that hat, dumbjaw. I just posted in another thread inquiring about the gray colors the Stylemaster is available in. I really like that moonstone gray...kind of a light gray. I like the look of the hat too. I may have to pop for one myself.

Must-resist-urge-to-pull-out-creditcard...

Beatiful hat.

Is the colour the same as the "steel gray" mentioned on hatsdirect.com?

I really need to order one for myself soon :)

Just came across this, thought I would share here.

A Akubra Stylemaster advertisement from the 1960s:

The crown was less tapered then.
(Or at least they wanted you to think so!)

I don't imagine the felt is a "tween season" weight any longer either...too little demand these days...would drive the price waaay up.

That is a superb-looking hat, Dumbjaw! I had no idea that the Stylemaster dated as far back as the 1960s, perhaps even earlier.

The color is excellent. The "moonstone grey" is the lightest of the three greys offfered in this hat, correct?

Love that bound edge brim, too, very classy.

And it has a white lining, not the usual Akubra red. Very interesting.

What did you pay for the hat itself? Shipping?
