And here I thought Gary Cooper shot Frank Miller dead in 1954.
I always wished I could have seen Jeff Daniels as Philip Marlowe. I think he's maybe a little too old now.

She calls herself a Chandler purist, but they moved the series to contemporary L.A. and gave Marlowe a sexy sidekick secretary.

She's about as purist as Altman.

Please no Frank Miller adaptions of Chandler! Chandler is NOT a wild graphic novel.

Surely they can find an American actor SOMEWHERE who can play Marlowe!!!

*sigh* The last great Philip Marlowe was Elliot Gould...who could top him?

um, virtually anyone?

His work in THE LONG GOODBYE may have been an interesting of-the-era, alternate take on the iconic private detective, but it bore precious little resemblance to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe.

Robert Mitchum played Marlowe two years after Gould and made the role his own. Bogart and Powell were both good, too, but Mitchum was the man to play Marlowe (OUT OF THE PAST proves it, too, since the detective he played in that classic noir is Marlowe-esque).

I was only partially serious...I thought Gould and Altman's take on Marlowe was brilliant, but honestly I wouldn't say Gould was the iconic Marlowe. I liked Mitchum's portrayal, but I thought he was a bit too old at the time. If he'd filmed it around the time of "Macao" he would've been perfect.

I can't really say who would be a good Marlowe today. I have a great affinity for the character and dread to think what the modern version will be like.

I share your skepticism, but it is fun to think about.

Clive Owen might not be a bad choice, if his American accent is good. Russell Crowe might work, too.

I don't know...In my mind's eye I always imagined Marlowe to have a quality of darkness, introspection and intelligence that Crowe lacks. I could sort of see Owen doing the part.

Hmmmm. I think the same issue came up with Dick Powell, in Murder My Sweet, it was his first 'tough guy' role.

I know he's the cat's meow for some people, but I'd have to cry a manly tear of disappointment if he was given the role. I can count the movies I liked him in on one hand, and it usually had more to do with the fact that he stared with the likes of Daniel Day Lewis, and Gene Hackman, then his actual talent.

Although some people say he was good in Shutter Island. I have no idea though since i haven't watched it yet.
