I don't know if anyone can help or not but I have a peacoat with those pewter buttons. I lost one of those buttons, does anyone have any idea where I might be able get one? I have been all over the internet and so far have been unable to locate one or even a set.
Thank you.

Have you tried local tailors or dry cleaning facilities? They may have what you need.
If you cannot locate one and should decide to replace the buttons, there are many listings for U.S. Navy Black Anchor Peacoat Buttons on ebay.

We looked for some pewter buttons for a Lounger 2 or 3 years ago without success. They have been discontinued since about 1984, so they are hard to find. Might be better off to replace the pewter buttons with the black plastic "fouled anchor" buttons. You could then sell your recently removed pewter buttons for big bucks to those who want to replace one or two. Or, if you are like me, just give them to someone who needs them.

If you find a source, please let us know so I can guide future pewter button seekers to the right place.

Can you post a picture of what they look like?

Go to the "Peacoat Dating" sticky thread at the top of the Outerwear section and look at the 5th post under 1970s. There your will see a picture of a 1974pewter button and a 1974 peacoat with pewter buttons. Or, if you don't find it, I will be glad to post a pic when I get home. No access to Photobucket from where I am now.

Military Surplus

I have seen those on the Service Dress Blue jackets that came out in the late 70’s for the Enlisted. They were supposed to replace the classic Navy “Cracker Jack” dress blue uniform. I guess they looked too much like Chiefs’ and Officers. I run into them on a fairly common basis at military surplus stores. Next time I stop by one I will make it a point to look for them. I didn’t realize that they were in demand.

Do you find them in loose lots at the suplus stores or attached to clothing? I wouldn't think there would be so many of the buttons that they would just be for sale in loose lots. At any rate here is the picture of the pewter button.

I'll look

I usually see them still attached to the SDB jackets and loose in small quantities. I am located in Norfolk, so we may have more than your average number of Navy surplus here.

Thanks to Ranger who supplied this link:

I went through what seems like every button they have when I came across this button in gold. It is the CPO button. There are are other finishes available as well--about 20 of them. You will need to know the ligne size of the button also. I imagine you could give the company the width of the button you want and the ligne size could be determined from that. To find this button, and the finishes available, go to Military>Eagles>US Navy.

OK, I did a little research, and you will need a ligne size of 40 as the buttons you want to replace are 1" in diameter. You are on your own as to the color, however, as there are a lot of choices.

Found it!

I was at my local surplus store today and found some of them. They are the size you need. They are made for the Peacoat. Let me know if you are interested. They actually have a few Peacoats with them on as well.

I know this is a stale thread, but I am looking for the exact same button....pewter colored from a late 70s peacoat. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone had any luck ordering from waterbury?

Unfortunately the button I pictured above doesn't appear to be available, at least I couldn't find it. The "US Navy" button, which is the exact button you are looking for has been replaced by the "Navy (CPO)" button. It is too small, and the eagle is facing the wrong way. You might want to snoot around in the Waterbury collection to see what you can find, or give them a call.

Welcome to the Lounge.
