Hello all,

I was looking at the website for this place in Nevada called, I think, thesewingplace.com. I saw that they sell colored petersham ribbon.

Is this ribbon suitable for hat ribbon, or is it to course?

I have been advised that the only really suitable hat ribbon is a combination cotton/rayon ribbon. According to many hatters, and I agree, without the cotton you will not get a ribbon that forms properly to the crown. Likewise, the sticklers for detail (you know who you are) will only accept rayon that is made from natural cellulose (i.e. wood). On mens hat ribbon the edges are smooth on each side with the ridges in the middle. (I am sure I am not using proper terminology here.) The ribbons that carry the zig/zag ridge from edge to edge are intended for women's hats. It really does make a difference. Hence the best ribbon is vintage and it is harder to find sometimes than a size 8 whippet. You will also discover that the colors are much better. Eric (hat neophyte, but learning)

Ribbon?

Anyone have any idea where I can find this mythical Cotton/Rayon ribbon? I'm looking for black and chocolate brown in 1" widths, and thinner stuff for brim binding, but no one has it...

Ebay, hearsay, and off road byways. You got to persistently hunt the stuff and hope for luck. Or......send the hat to a hatter who already has a stash. It don't come easy. Eric
