My son picked up the hat yesterday. He sent pictures and it looks ok. I asked for a bound brim and or style ribbon...got a simple ribbon and unbound brim. So... I’ll take a trip to Texas hatters when I get the hat in hand at Christmas time.

When I was there I was told, by Brad, they could not do bindings on brims. It will be interesting to see your pictures when you get it.

My son and my hat are home from TCU! First impression--this hat is pretty great! The conformateur worked fantastic--I'm somewhere between a 7 and a 71/8 and this hat fits perfectly. The natural color is a nice change from the silver belly I normally go with. And the 50/50 beaver and whatever (rabbit probably) feels very nice without too much stiffener. I would put the felt somewhere between my 7x Open Road and my Alessandria. We had rain yesterday, so, the first thing I did was snap down the brim and head outside. Water doesn't seem to bother this hat at all! I'm not bothered by the lack of binding on the brim Like I thought I would be--again, a little different from my normal hats. Pictures to come.

Yes, but at least I got the Peters Brothers sweatband which is the main reason I went there. Even though the seam will have to be re-sewn it’s still a good sweat.

A few days ago I grabbed a Stetson 100 that will need some work. It also is beige. So I’m thinking I’ll send out all three together. Question is to whom? I have two in my mind I’m contemplating.

What is the status of these two hats, now? I'm especially eager to see what becomes of the 1932 in skilled hands.

They are at Vintage Silhouettes waiting their turn with Art Fawcett. They’ve been there since December 19th. I actually sent the two Peters Bros and a Stetson 100.

In good hands at last, then.

Here is the 1932 Shady Oak.

The plan for this hat was a full restoration. Meaning a full cleaning, new sweatband, keep original liner, keep the brim at 2 3/4" raw, replace the ribbon, double bow, and re-block as much as possible.

I like the sweatband itself. It's a nice sheepskin band and it has the Peters Brothers name. That is the main reason I wanted them to do the work. To get a Peters Brothers sweatband.

I got the Peters Bros 1932 back from Art Fawcett this last week. Here are the results.

I gave Art pretty much free range with this hat. Art went with a darker ribbon than I had suggested. It's a dark navy blue (almost black). I know it was cleaned a couple of times but is still stained/dingy. I may try cleaning some more but to me this hat has character. With the tight pinch and stains I feel it has the "been there and done that" look to it.

I am very hesitant to post these pictures. I have dealt with Brad Peters and his employee (sorry I don't remember his name). Both are very nice and want to do a good job. I can tell they really want to do well. Remember, Shane no longer works at Peters Brothers and he was the main person doing the needle work.

Last week I went to Peters Brothers to pick up my two hats. I did not leave with them. I pointed out to Brad that I could put my middle finger behind each ribbon and he agreed the ribbons were loose. He was very nice and made sure I understood that since Shane left they are learning on the fly how to do things.

Today I went back and picked up the hats. I am not going to comment further. I really like both of the guys there and hope they get really good with their needle work.

The plan for this hat was to reshape into a fedora and replace the ribbon with this 1 1/2" blue. Band was to have double bow. Crown bashed to be a diamond. I kept the brim at 3 1/4" raw.

Here is what Art Fawcett did for this 1960's Shady Pines/Oaks. Sorry no head shots as yet.

Art went with a Forrest Green ribbon with a tan accent. It looks fantastic in person and the pictures aren't shabby. While talking to Dave he told me the sweatband was a bit brittle and starting to crack. So I got another sweatband from Peters Bros and sent it to them to replace. I have the original sweatband and to me it seem fine - but what do I know. When you get an expert to help and give advise - take it. There was a bit of a problem in that the brim wound up being trimmed from 3 1/4" to 2 3/4". I had not wanted that but like the saying goes "a third world problem". The wider cowboy hats have such a stiff brim I'm sure it's difficult to deal with. There is one noticeable spot on top of the brim that didn't come clean. I may work on it some more - or not.

I wish I could have got this kind of work accomplished at Peters Bros. It would be so convenient being so close. I really hope everything works out there. But as long as I have access to guys like Art I'm a happy camper!

I like a hat that has stories to tell. Looks well loved and good for another 100,000 Miles.

Wow Bill:
Another 100 to go with your tan one. This one has to be a one in a millon being that color. Love it. The color makes me think of Bamas Portis. Age wise i think you’re gonna have to bite the bullet till you can look under the liner. Maybe another 30s?? I think you are officially the Shady Oaks guru now. Ha
Very very nice catch Bill.
