Period Films in Period Times

I feel that the reason that they don't seem as authentic is because at the time they were made, as close as it was to the actual time, they weren't showing it to a 1880s audience. They were showing it to a 30's/40's/50's, etc audience and so had to bring them something acceptable of the present time. Movies keep up with society and sometimes are further ahead.

I suppose I'll pull out the obvious Jane Eyre. The Barretts of Wimpole Street with Norma Shearer. The southern dramas like Jezebel and The Little Foxes. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. Queen Christina? Leslie Howard in The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Then there are the swashbucklers like Captain Blood. I love the 'bucklers.

That's a good list. And I too have a thing for Errol Flynn. *sigh* lol

Another good one that I just thought of is The Magnificent Ambersons with Orson Wells.

Well, Gone with the Wind was pretty darn amazing. It's the closest I've seen to accurate costumes come out of the glamour factories back then...

Other favorites but not remotely historically correct...
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
Gaslight (with Ingrid Bergman)
And pretty much anything with Jeanette MacDonald. Adrian was the MASTER dressmaker!

No the Flash Gordon vehicles weren't even believable for me as a kid, when I saw them. They usually showed them in profile to keep "flying' problems minimal and even then we knew smoke in space was phoney.

Of course all that didn't diminish the imagination it stimulated in kids.
