hello,
Many thanks for the kindly references to our shirts. I will definitely work on making separate spearpoint collars although possibly a less extreme version than the photo.
Does anyone have a preference for the washable variety or would you like me to persist with the traditional starched collars?
The washable are not as stiff but I appreciate that laundering is a problem especially outside Britain.
best wishes from Miss Darcy. Vintage Shirt Company. England

A washable shirt would be much appreciated but even more an extra-long sleeve option! , I was on the brink of ordering some other shirts at your company, but they turned out to be all standard sized (read, too short sleeves for my monkey-arms.) Thank you for chiming in on this forum..

Are these long, pointed collars more appropriate for using a collar bar? I've tried to use one with my generic modern shirt, and it just doesn't look quite right. It's not a spread collar, just a plain old standard modern collar.

Most modern dress shirts do not accomodate a collar bar because of the shape rather than the length of the points.
The shape of these collars are not sufficient to clip together.
With some searching you can find modern collars that work. If you find it works then do it!
Here is a modern shirt with collar bar and vintage tie.

Thanks for the info and pictures, Feraud. :) Looking at mine again, you're definitely right about it being the shape and not the length that is the problem. Also, it seems my collar bar needs to be more curved:

Notice the "puckers" where the bar clips. Not sure what's going on there, but it seems that if it were more curved it wouldn't do that.

The puckering at the collar could be because of the collar and not the bar. Most modern shirt collars are thick and it is a chore to get the collar bar to clip on them. That is in addition to their bad collar shapes..

Vintage ties work better with collar bars than modern. Modern ties are (like modern collars) thick and seem to not produce that small tight knot that sits well with the collar bar. Vintage ties tie a great small knot.

A bit of trial and error with different shirts and ties will show you what works best.

I'll keep experimenting, thanks. That is a modern tie, but I removed the lining and restitched it back together because of the original thickness of it. It's hard to tell in the picture, but the knot is quite small, and also short. I tied it long and the knot wound up being on a skinnier part of the tie. Here is what it looked like when I attempted it with a modern, unmodified tie (excuse the terrible cell phone pic):

It's definitely much more difficult with a thick tie! Though oddly, the collar itself looks better (to me) in these photos. [huh]

Sorry to revive a somewhat old thread, but I thought I'd let everyone know that I found a shirt at Belk with a fairly vintage looking collar, which also seems to work pretty well with a collar bar. Also, it was on sale for $25! Granted, it's not the best shirt, but the collar is nice and it fits my particular body reasonably well for a cheap shirt. It's a Madison brand and is wrinkle-free. Could be a decent option for those of us wanting a collar bar-ready collar but can't spend a lot.
