Pepe Lo Moko was the original French film that Algiers, 1938 was based on that starred Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr. This one stars the one and only Jean Gabin. See it.

Just watched La Bandera with Jean Gabin on TCM. Most enjoyable.

Pepe Le Pew is one of so many characters that started out as spoofs of popular performers, and the original performer is long forgotten. I think that rooster character, Foghorn Leghorn, is also based on a movie character of the 40's. I think Warner Bros did that a lot.

In that case gentleman can I recommend this book, it's an eye-opener! Written 1949, not too hard to find, very faux-racy tabloid style but the facts are very interesting.
