People who talk to themselves

This thread brings up some interesting points. Just because someone is a few cards short of a full deck, doesn't mean we should banish them to the psych ward for the rest of their lives. However, when that person becomes a threat to themselves and others, you have to draw the line.

Case in point... We put up with a schizophrenic neighbour for the past 8 months. She made our lives miserable. When she was on her meds, she was a sweet, if somewhat odd, older woman. Very friendly, very polite. She had been in and out of institutions and lived on the street for some time, and had finally got her life in order and received a flat (in a very nice location I might add) courtesy of our local council.

She was a bit odd though... She'd talk to herself (no crime), and talk to her cat - long in-depth conversations (again, no crime). She told us in all seriousness that the cat would often give her good advice and tell her secrets... okay... a bit strange, but not hurting anyone.

However she started to have "episodes"... Screaming, howling and arguing in several voices, a lá "The Exorcist" (at first she had us convinced that there was a thug in the flat with her) every so often during the day. These started to happen more and more frequently.

Then they started to happen at night - always around 3:30AM. Not fun in a late 1800s building with rather thin walls. No sleep, not at all.

Then she stopped coming out of the flat during the day - she'd only come out at night to forage through the neighbourhood rubbish and hoard all sorts of treasures. We'd hear her dragging them up the stairs into the building. As you can imagine - this presents a serious health hazard.

Then she started to break things and become aggressive, and her screaming sessions would last for days. She started to break windows and throw things around her flat.

The council was totally ineffective in dealing with her. As a matter of fact, they attempted to paint us as unsympathetic to this poor woman who was trying to reintegrate into society.

We ended up having to call the police. When they came the first time, she attempted to attack one of the officers with a broken bottle.

This happened about 5 or six times, until my wife finally had it. After a solid week of nocturnal ravings, police visits and broken windows she marched down to the council and threatened them with legal action if they didn't get this poor woman some proper medical attention.

It was clear that this woman could not live unsupervised, otherwise she would end up hurting herself or someone else.

... and for those "normal" people who wear those big flashing bluetooth earpieces and babble away in public... They look like rejects from Star Trek or something, wannabe Borgs with big pieces of plastic sticking out of their ears. :p They look like right eejits with those things, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one.

Makes you wonder where her family is! :eek:fftopic: this is a topic that I had recently, I don't know if it's just me, but, it seems our culture is going away from family taking care of family. I have always felt that if something happens to either my mother or my husbands parents, we would take care of them...I don't see this too much these days. Even now, when they're sick, I'm more than happy to come over and help out with whatever...My mother works in a nursing home and many of them have no one who visits, I find this very sad

I agree with you, I see it too. The parents take care of the kids when they are little and need it, so how come the kids aren't taking care of the parents when they get older and need it? It breaks my heart to see these elderly residents in the nursing homes just sitting there waiting for someone to come see them. That's one of the reasons I'm going to school for nursing, so I can care for my family like they did for me.

On a lighter note, who sings in the shower (sort of like talking to yourself!)?
I love it, especially if I've had a stressful day, it really improves my mood, besides the accustics are great!:D

I do all the time! It disappoints me when I get out - I don't sound nearly as good out of the shower! :D

I really dislike anyone discussing their legal issues in public on a cellphone. I've heard custody issues SCREAMED into phones, divorce cases, and in a couple memorable cases felony trials. (Why would you discuss crimes you've committed in public? Discretion if not morals would seem to come into play, wouldn't they?)

Oh gosh, just the other day I overheard a young lady in the Wal-Mart parking lot (yes, I know, Wal-Mart) yelling into her cellphone about some problem with either her probation or parole.

I've also overheard a homosexual encounter being arranged, in extremely descriptive explicit terms, on a cell phone in the Target checkout line.

Seriously, people! DISCRETION!!!

Just recalled a statement in "Dr Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde". Dr Jeckyll speaking:

"... it chanced that the direction of my scientific studies, which led wholly towards the mystic and transcendental, reäcted and shed a strong light on this consciousness of the perennial war among my members. With every day, and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and the intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to that truth, by whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two. I say two, because the state of my own knowledge does not pass beyond that point. Others will follow, others will outstrip me on the same lines; and I hazard the guess that man will be ultimately known for a mere polity of multifarious, incongruous and independent denizens."

I suspect Stevenson was on the right track. Before we condemn those people who clearly need help, it might help to think about how different they really are, and what might tip us over that ledge into their condition. We see this phenomenon quite often when people get drunk. I've seen the nicest sweetest old lady become a snarling maniac after too much brandy. How far is the everyday persn away from mental illness? How far from being arrested and tossed in Bedlam?

Paddy, the voice of reason again ...

Okay, we've all got caught either talking or singing to ourselves...but, what about the people who go down the streets having full on conversations or cussing at absolutely no one at all? I've got one that daily goes walking past my house and is really starting to freak me out...do these guys freak you out as well? Or...are you that kind of 'person'?
Even though they can be scary, due to their sudden screaming and ranting, I do feel sorry for them at times. I couldn't image what is going on in their heads. Here in Australia, they have closed down institutes for the mentally ill and so they are wondering the streets not knowing what to do(not all, some have homes). I think the government closed them down due to the stigma and negative aspects mental institutes have had over the years, that there can be abuse and no positive stimulation they probably need. The idea of the rotting in their I guess? However, If they really find they need help they can go to hospitals that cater for them, but I'm finding they can get turned away and if they aren't supervised or followed up on the odd and unfortunate occasion has lead to serious social implications like suicide and murder.

On a positive note some can try and lead a normal life, with help from family and friends. There is this lady that has to go by our work and she just starts yelling at anything. Usually at the ATM machine. She's definately lost it. She gives us a bit of entertainment from our daily grind, but I'd say she's fairly harmless, though I wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of her ranting which doesn't actually last long. Poor lady!!!!

Especially in my area, where so many people on cells are having cuss-fit arguments.

Usedta be a time when a man walking down the street quietly who suddenly bursts into "NO, you [expletive deleted!] YOURSELF! You heard me! AAGH!" was not considered normal.

I've done the same thing. Gives me quite a jolt when I realize they're talking on the phone.

In Chile, when cell phones first began to appear but were too expensive for most folks, a thriving black market sold fake plastic 'phones', complete with stickers that looked like a screen and buttons. People would buy them from street vendors and then walk or drive around, pretending to be talking on their new 'cell phones.'

We call it the K-Mart disease here, all the people who have been here a long time, one lady's been working here since 1974, she's the current record holder. It seems the longer they work here, the more they talk to themselves. I'm a self-singer. I'm always walking about carrying a tune.

They were marketed here as well, though they were aimed at children.

My dad had one, and used it as a one-tme joke on his buddies on the job-site, who all knew how thrifty he was, and he pulled out this cell phone, mind you this was in the late 1980s.

"Kennedy's Children" anyone?

This thread should be on stage or screen. It's by turns serious, judgmental, whimsical, introspective, hysterically funny, and totally entertaining.

I told myself not to post this but then I ignored myself and did it anyway. Now I'm going to leave me alone and go to bed.
