I wonder how many of those vintage mustaches are real?

In one of the early posts the concept of a pencil moustache conveys an almost higher sense of masculinity because it is difficult to grow and get right. If your whiskers are sparse you may have a problem with growing one. (I can't! I can grow a stache but don't have the density of whiskers to make the pencil style.)

The thing is if you faked the pencil moustache for a film ok but not as a daily personal style choice, that would fail quickly I think.

Here's mine, four months along.

It's admittedly a little sparse (and light in color), but I get compliments on it often.

I'd more wonder how many were artificially thickened with either eyebrow pencil, mascara, or both. I've seen photos that confirm John Waters colors his in; and I've heard that Clark Gable did the same so that it would appear fuller on camera.

Spitfire - That's coming in pretty good!

(It makes me think of the old term for a big bushy moustache- the Soup Strainer!)

When ever I grow a moustache at some point I try to trim it to a pencil type, I screw it up and end up shaving it off.
Then a few months down the line I try it again.

Pencil Mustaches/Thin Mustaches

Hey,

I personally think that the thin mustache/pencil style was one of the best trends to come out of the Golden Era---A very debonaire, stylish, groomed facial hair style. It adds something to a man's face, unlike the bushier kind of mustaches ala Selleck where it overpowers the man's face.

Anyway, here's to the pencil mustache--Can anyone list some stars from the 20s-40s who had one?

Hi,
I know this thread has not been used in a while, but I just joined the lounge, and this was part of the reason why.

There is my pencil mustache. It was just freed from an awful separated goatee combo al Johnny Depp (read a silly patch of hair on my chin, and a sad soul patch).
Any thoughts?

Good on ya. Love it. My only regret is that in the few years in Seattle, and five years of San Francisco from 1993 to 2000, I have only one or two pictures of my, my wardrobe, swing dancing, and my glorious pencil moustache. Due to modern times, Seattle, my current lifestyle, and whatever, i am sure I will never have one outside of the occasional Halloween special. But sometimes, late at night, listening to some sweet swing, i miss it.

Haven't posted a shot of mine in a while. This is about as good as it's going to get, I guess.

It is just as much as Errol Flynn's.

There is something to be said for the light-hair pencil mustache (for some reason this photo makes his hair look darker, but I am sure you get the point.)
