Pegasus Durable Clothing Horsehide Cafe Racer Review

So I decided after months of debating and saving to purchase a cafe racer jacket from Pegasus Durable Clothing. It was a move I wouldn't regret:D and in this review I will examine the jacket from two viewpoints: form & function. I've owned or do currently own all the major players in the market. Currently alongside my Pegasus I own two Bates ('76 All Pro racer and early 80's lancer type CHP) But I've sold off some Vanson's, Brimacos, Brooks etc...My ride is a '58 ironhead chopa that I built in 2001.

Hopefully the image of my bike uploaded, if so you can see the extreme reach I have for the bars. The issue I've always had with my leathers is how they fit on and off the bike. Usually on the bike good=off the bike bad. In the same way I want a jacket that looks good open and closed. Enter the Pegasus. First thing I noticed was the leather. Very thick and robust indeed. I sold my Aero b/c it felt like heavy plastic...perhaps if I had received it on my 18th birthday it would have started to break in by now(I'm 38). I'm not knocking Aero at all...just not my cup o' tea. Where the Aero was restrictive in movement the Pegasus is not, the leather is much more flexible and has a softer hand. The vintage black finish is beautiful w/ glowing brown highlights reminding me off my fathers old riding leathers.

Everything on this jacket is finished perfectly. Cuff zips on the outside of sleeve is great, chest
zips function well and are easy to grasp w/ gloves. I believe this to be suitable riding gear for protective purposes as the leather is quite stout. Hopefully I'll never have to test it. I like my leathers neat and trim as you can see

I'm 5'10, 210lbs and saw fit to order a size 42"
So functionally I think this is the finest leather I've owned. I suppose I should mention the quality of the lining as well. Very soft and comfortable tartan plaid in the body and wonderful satin in the sleeves. Very easy to wear and comfortable on the skin. I never really liked drill type liners or zip-ins. From the standpoint of form the jacket is perfect, very neat and square at the shoulders, sleeves are trim (very much apart from Vanson & Aero) and stylistically all the elements are spot on. I was a little concerned about the height of the stand collar at first but when I tried it on those fears abated...
If I were to change anything on this jacket it would be the length in back...I'd like another 1" in back, in part b/c of the posture I assume when riding. I absolutely plan on ordering another jacket from Pegasus, perhaps w/ some customization. My next will be his "D" pocket, I feel for the $ spent you can't find a better jacket.

Great jacket! Outstanding look and fit.

What is the back-length of that jacket (from beginning of collar till end of bottom hem)?

Thanks

Jackets looks great. If you wear a pair of vintage repro jeans with a high waist, you may find the length issue disappears. Older jackets were made for older pants which had a long front rise. Wear it in good health.

Nice jacket (and bike) there. The finish and detailing looks excellent, the stitching is very neat, and the fit's good.

What's the leather like? You mention it's less plastic than Aero FQHH, so I'm guessing it's softer and thinner.

Oh, if you want another idea for the inevitable next jacket, how about a Good Wear Mojave?

Thanks. I was vague, but I actually meant the Pegasus CafeRacer (not that GW isnt good, its incredible, I just love Pegasus clothes somehow).

I know there are pictures on the website, I have seen them many times, but I would love a fit pic from the back from the threadstarter, its always nice to see jackets worn by "normal" people.

I love how the leather look, even tho I love Aeros FQHH, this look fits better with a CafeRacer imho.

Hi, ton312:
That is a great-looking jacket, and fits perfectly it appears. You've written an exceptional review to go with the jacket. I encourage you to buy at least one jacket from each of the 'majors' and post a review here for us. ;) Thanks.

I know what you mean. I'm rather smitten by their Safari Jacket, but am a bit nervous about spending that much blind. I would with a Good Wear, but that's because I've not heard a bad word about John Chapman's work.

If I had the money and had no intention of reselling it I would not be nervous. From what I have seen the jackets look as good or better then any of the major makers. And I am sure he would stand up for his work if anything unforseen would happen (like stitching that fails or anything of the sort). The maker has an account on the forum and has made jackets for people in here before.

The only thing I can see negative is that it probably wont get as good second hand value because the brand is not well known.

From experience, I can say GW resale is great. This summer, I saw two jackets sell for more than a new one. Small, but known. You can't lose on an Aero or GW, assuming its not some odd size or customization. People will pay NOT to wait 3-16 months if a used jacket fits.

Griff, assuming you're talking about Pegasus, I'd agree. From the photos (above) their jackets appear to be on a par with the Good Wear in terms of detailing, and possibly ahead of Aero. I prefer the Pegasus designs to Good Wear's utility jackets, as they seem to have a bit more attitude.

I think that my concern with Pegasus is simply that I haven't seen one. The danger is that when I do I'll have a bout of jacket acquisition syndrome. :)

I own a D-Pocket made to measure (specifically a women model), I own several leather jackets and I can say I put this jacket at the same level as a Tony Nowak, the same goes for the customer services.

Kevin is a really nice guy, answer all of my concern and very courteous.

That's all the measurements I have.Scott, the seller at the VLJ is member 767foI've purchased from him before...so he knows I am his size...and that I am a GW fan, hence he contacted me before advertising the sale. You can PM him through the VLJ to get the rest of the information.
Ah, OK. thanks, but 767fo is a real 46 so I can't do. But he takes great care of his gear, so if someone wants this - get it fast! He has so many they never even look worn. :)

I really like the GW jackets. I think what ultimately made me select Pegasus was originality. It's not a repro or remake. It's an original. I also think that when you start to examine all these high end makers ultimately it becomes a matter of personal preference. These guys/gals are all very skilled artists and their products are so nice that comparisons can quickly become opinions and are best left to the individual consumer. So...if I had the scratch I'd buy them all and wear a different one everyday!
