Pegasus D-pocket review

By JohnnyJohnny and Shapiro request I post my first review on the FL.

The jacket I received last week is the long time awaited Pegasus D-pocket jacket, a model that somehow took shape on this board thanks to the feedback of the member. Personally I always was into Perfecto-like brown jacket since...I watched Escape from NY when I was a kid. I was looking for something similar: a double breasted biker's jacket of the forties in brown, possibly without belt (i always found the non removable belt of the Schotts a little clumsy to wear); there isn't much about on the market beside the Aero bootlegerand Magnoli's replica, until I found the discussions about this new brand and visited the website. From the pics I had seen it looked very good and original, with a nice paid cotton lining (that I like a lot), and after having seen that in their ebay shop you could make offer I made a proposal that I considered reasonable for a good quality horsehide jacket. It should have sounded reasonable for the other side too, because Kevin (the owner of the new brand) accepted it, and after a four weeks' wait on friday I received the jacket. Was it as good as it looked on the net? I took some pics with my crappy cell phone so you can decide yourself.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The D-pocket model according to Kevin is inspired by the biker's jacket of the 40s, but it's not a copy of any of the models of that time: completely zipped up it it looks like a double breasted cossack or ulhan miltiary jacket, and it's characterized by a very clean look thanks to the lack of studs Perfecto style, lack of epaluettes, slanted side pockets close by two horn buttons, and the D-panel. Most of the D-pockets based on the originals Schott 1928 and Buco J-23 are characterized by an angular beaty given by the squared shoulders and the oblique straight main zipped, this is not the case of the Pegasus whose style is dominated by curve lines: the main zipper is not straight but it's slightly bent, another gentle curve cut the lower part of the jacket covering the belt of the owner, the D pocket itself is mostly rounde with an oblique line parallel to the zipper and a point down which matches the point of the zippo pocket closed by another horn button. The angle of inclination on the central vertical line is equal for the main zipper and the D pocket zipper, creating a nice simmetry.

This frontal picture of the newly finished jacket (by the seller) shows very well these elements:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The back of the jacket is characterized by the three "by swing" panels that allows some mobility of the shoulders when riding (this is a motorcycle jacket after all), something taken from vintage german jackets, and the lower panel with the four belts to adjust the waist:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The pic clearly shows that the front is much longer than the back, which is 24" for the size 38, and this makes it very similar to the Aero 30s half belt which shows the same cut for a single breasted jacket. The cut of the sleeve is VERY slender, almost tight at the armpits, not a problem if you wear a T-shirt but with a sweater it may result too snug for somebody.

The horsehide used is a very nice chrome tanned mid weight leather, very flexible and elastic, with a shiny, almost wet finish. The shade of chocolate brown is very peculiar and difficult to catch with a camera, the grain of the panels perfectly matched. If you want a heavy "bullet proof" horsehide like those used by LW and Aero it's not a your cup of tea, but it's very similar to the mid weight oil pull hh besides the finish.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The lining is a nice and soft cotton plaid, similar to tartan, very light but a little baggy. Globally, it's a mid season jacket, not too warm, but Pegasus also offers a herringbone wool lining...at least I think. The combination of this cotton plaid and brown horsehide made me choose the Pegasus and the jacket didn't make me regret my decision. I would have loved to have a scarf of the same plaid but it wasn't possible to get one, however with open lapels and with a tartan scarf the jacket looks very good:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Without snaps the lapels tend to flap a little, the jacket needs some time to break in, but at this beginning the jacket unzipped is a little cumbersone to wear.

How does it fit?

Here there's a pic of the jacket taken the same evening I received it:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'm 179 cm, weight about 75 kg and I usually wear 36-37 jacket, but for vintage fits like the Aero half belt I wear 38, so I ordered a 38. I was a little concerned about the front length of the jacket which makes my HB unsuited to ride and to keep zipped when driving, so I asked Kevin to have a 1/2 inch shorter jacket with normal sleeves, unfortunately this information was lost in the command chain and I got the normal lenght jacket...:(
This is the only serious criticism I have on the jacket, on all the other aspect it looks tailored on my measurements and fits incredibly well. The cantilever arms are very snug but I don't find them uncomfortable, they're placed very high on the jacket but thanks to the softness of the hide (it doesn't reall need breaking) they aren't very constrictive.
The day after I could take better pics with more light:

And zipped:

The cut of the jacket allows me to sport a bee's waist... :)

What am I forgetting? The zippers are Ideal vintage brass, they looks like Conmars and they're of good quality but I prefer the Talon replicas of my Aeros.

In conclusion, I like the jacket very much, the craftmanship is equal to the main players on the market, but there are some points that I think could be improved:

1)IMO it's a little bit too long on the front for me and for riding.

2)The jacket does have four nice buttons that gives a very vintage look, probably button cuffs would suit the style better than the zippers.

3)The hide and lining are of top notch quality, but somebody would like something a little heavier, just time will tell if they're heavy duty as the brand advertises... ;)

4)The side pockets are very nice but they should be a little deeper, of course it can interfere with the D pocket (this is the only D I know that has side pockets) but I think a cm can be saved.

5)I would love to see a distressed version of the hide.

Thank you for the attention, I apologise for the verbosity but I hope it was entertaining to read! :p

Beautiful jacket! I love Aero's fqhh, but the softer horse has it's place too. I'd love one of these one day.

As for the sleeve length, a local tailor should be able to do an alteration or if you send if back to Aero, Amanda will do it free of charge, since they goofed. Other than that, its a very nice jacket. Congratulations!

It's not Aero! And the sleeve length is perfect...they're just very snug! :D

Understood... if you were unhappy, Pegasus would have done it right for you since you related your wishes got lost in the original communication. It appears to be fine now.

Enjoy your new jacket and wear it in good health!

Yes, the jacket is pretty good and I'm very satisfied, even with the communication problem we had I decided to keep it because...well it's too nice to give it back. Some members here asked a review, they needed a beta tester (or a guinea pig) so I wrote this thread to share some pics, here there's the background of the genesis of the jacket:

That is a bit good, I really like the back on it and it is nice to see a jacket of that type without epaulets which shows off the nicely squared off shoulders which give it a nice sharp look which seems very rare in leather jackets.

When I was a headbanger years ago we all had that assymetric type of jacket and we never called them brando jackets , they were always called lancer (uhlan) jackets, but non of them looked that sharp.

Out of interest aero is flogging a load of their old repro zips on ebay at the moment.

Do the pocket flaps get in your way when putting your hands into your pocket? That was a concern of mine.

Do you mean the small leather "tongues"? You can keep them inside the pocket if they are not fastened, they're pocket flaps like the ones of the A-2s or police jackets.

Now that you make me think the jacket would also look good with triangular pocket flaps ala Hartmann...

Good write-up Cuthbert, and a lovely jacket. I'm a fan of the lancer front jackets too, so it's nice to see something a bit different. It's a much more European look, and the back is great! Must say that as good as it looks, the lower cut of the front of the jacket is a strange choice for a m/c jacket, it'd surely just get in the way?
Anyway, looks great on you, and well done to Pegasus for coming up with a unique and stylish design.

Great jacket, for me two things make it: a) it features vintage details, but it's an original design. b) neat military fit.

There's something that doesn't seem quite right about it, I think it's those pocket tabs. I think they are one detail too many. But that's just me.
Any chance of getting an outdoors shot?

Interesting Tony, today I visited LL and I got a brochure: all the the double breasted jackets were indeed called "lancer jacket", I assume it was the old british term for these jackets...that I like!

For the zippers, the Ideals used on this D pocket are the same as the Aero Conmars...same maker.

You mean that the jacket is longer on the front? For what I've seen it was a common feature of many MC jackets of the 30s and the 60s, The Aero 3's HB is similar, but being a single breasted, you have a sort of "point", same thing that I found in my Schott 642xx which is 25.5" on the back and 27" on the front.

I think that these jackets were cut this way to cover the belt buckle of the rider and therefore protect the tank from scratches, but it's just my speculation, as you can see from the picture the jackets leaves most of my belt visible but completely covers my vintage Honda four buckle.

2)Yes, the details are matched with taste.
b)Yes indeed, "vintage" military fit, that means XIXth century mil specs, like the old shell jackets for horseriders...after all the vehicle has changed but the application is the same!

The pocket tabs for what I understand are small because they just need to fasten the pockets, as I wrote if they disturb the visual you can keep them into the pockets, of course the buttons remain visible but they are more discreet than zippers IMO

Outdoor shot: as you can see, I'm not really a fan of pics, but I understand that it's difficult to judge the shade of chocolate brown of the horshide...I'll see what I can do.

Just a quick question Cuthbert: How does the Pegasus compare to an Aero in terms of finish and general quality?

The jackets look fantastic on the website, and it sounds like you're very happy with yours, so it can't be that bad. :)

Yes their pictures are better than mine! :)

I have own four Aeros, a D-1, a 2nd Hercules, an heavy steerhide HB and a custom Hyghwayman, I can compare the Pegasus with the latter twos, in particular with the 30s HB which is very similar in term of size and fit...both jackets are top notch in terms of quality, but as finish I think this D-pocket is more similar to Lewis Leathers, you're from London therefore I assume you know the brand well.

Thanks Cuthbert.

I've seen the Lewis jackets, albeit briefly. I think that some of the detailing is nicer than on the Aeros, but they don't feel as robust. :)

I should probably take another trip to their shop sometime.

Going on experience from a few years ago the lewis leathers jackets were pretty much bulletproof when new (bit too much for me( and even after a couple of years wear it was only just breaking in, also I saw a mate's one that had been "down the road" and knowing him it wasn't at slow speed and it took that in it's stride very well.

They sure as hell were not fashion jackets they were tough as old boots bike jackets which made them a pain in the neck to wear in for me but I knew if things went wrong they could take whatever was thrown at them.

I've got a 'new' Lewis, and it's very well put together. The stitching and general finishing are immaculate, and the fit is spot on. The leather used is very supple with a fine grain and probably about 3-3.5oz in weight, so very comfortable to wear/ride in, it's also extremely water resistant - more so than my FQHH Aero - and seems to hold up well to scuffs and scrapes. Very different type of jacket to an Aero. Maybe not as heavy-duty, but certainly a lot more comfortable to ride in.

Yes that was I meant, general finish and supple hide with very uniform grain, the Pegasus is however lighter than the LL because the latter are made of cowhide (horsehide is generally thinner, in this case it's about 3 oz) and they have a padded lining that make them more substantial.

IMO without going too much OT I tried a pair of LL in the shop, a supersportsman and a super phantom, they both felt very heavy, the SP more than the SS because of the pads, in general I found them very well made and built with a great attention to detail, the uniformity of the grain was something unbelievable to a certain level, it almost looked like they were made of synthetic material but of course they were just of very selected leather.
