Pea coat question from chile!

Hello Everyone!
This is my first post!

My name is Nicolás and i'm a film student from Santiago, Chile.
Since last year i became very interested in clothing, especially coats & jackets.
Last January, my mother gave my brother a coat that she had bought from a Used Clothing store.
My brother lend me the coat for about a month.
I liked it so much that i started investigating on the internet about the coat. Turns out the coat belonged to a certain type: The Pea Coat.
Because my brother loves his Pea Coat, i started to look in every store to get one for me, but i couldn't find one that was similar to the one my brother has.
Now, when i was investigating about the types of Pea Coats, i came across this forum.
I thought: "This guys could really help me!", especially Mr."Peacoat" (I´ve read a lot of his posts).

So: guys, Mr. Peacoat; please help me! I need to:

-Figure out the size of this coat that fits me so perfectly.
-Figure out the brand of the coat, or a brand that makes coats closest to the design my brother's coat has.
(P.S: The coat doesn't have any size or brand tab; the only tab left says "DRY CLEAN BY A REPUTABLE CLEANER")

First: For you guys to help me figure out the size, the measures of my brother's Pea Coat are:
-Coat Chest: 39"
-Coat Sleeve (center of back, over shoulder to sleeve bottom):32.5"
-Coat back length (under collar to back hem): 28.2"

Secondly: I made a photo album of my brother's Pea Coat. I took pictures of buttons, seamings, lining, etc; plus, i added some observations on the pictures to help you help me identifying the coat's brand or anything that could worth something.

Hoping to read from you guys soon!

Hello and welcome!

I've just had a look at the pictures. Your peacoat looks very much like a mil spec peacoat but it appears to be shorter and it doesn't have the back vent. The cloth is melton which has already lost a lot of its nap in certain places. The buttons look original and the top stitching on the cuffs reminds me of a WWII peacoat. But I'm sure that this is a civilian model.

Maybe it was manufactured by a company that once had a military contract.

Hope this helps a bit...

Welcome to the Lounge Mr. Chile. I agree with Jan about the civilian nature of this peacoat.

You mention that you have read some of my posts, but you don't say that you have read my article on Peacoat Dating I wrote for the Lounge. There is a section on sizing of peacoats toward the end of the article, which should answer your questions about the size of the peacoat that fits you so well. Also the article contains a lot of arcane peacoat information you might find interesting. It is found in a sticky toward the top of the Outerwear Section. For your convenience I have posted a link below.

If, after reading the article, you still have questions, please send me a PM and I will give you an answer. Or, if your PM feature is not yet activated, I will answer your questions in this thread.

Cheers, Mr. Peacoat

Thanks Guys!
Jan, thank you for your useful information!
Mr. Peacoat: So glad reading from you!
I've read your article on PEACOAT DATING, and now i'm more clear about my doubts.
Based on what i've read, i estimate my coat could be from the 80's forward, cause it's made from deep midnight blue Melton, it has six buttons, and it doesn't have any stitching above the cuffs.
Now, there are some things about my brother's Peacoat:
First, it doesn't have a back vent, neither a seaming along the back. Also, compared to the more modern models of Peacoats i've seen here, the lapels on my brother's coat look smaller and not that flatter.
Thanks to your article, now i know im a size 38''. We Chileans are not that big :p.
Based on your conclusions about my brother's coat, i can assume it's a civilian coat, but with a good ressemblance to the military ones.
I really want to have a Peacoat of my own;so now i want to ask for your help, if you can advice me on which brand of Peacoats resembles my brother's the most?
I don't really care that much, for example, if the coat has a vent or not. What i do care is: The fabric. I really like the thick melton and the way it fits (a little stiff, but creates a great shape). Also the color. I like the deep midnight blue a lot. I like the pattern of the seaming too, cause i think it plays its share with shaping the coat. And i like that the lapels are not really that wide, nor totally flat on the chest. If the coat has six or eight buttons, i don't care that much.
So Mr. Peacoat, i hope you can help me with my search for this perfect Peacoat (for my taste, at least:cool:).

Thanks Already!

Nicolás.

It appears you want a size 38 in the Kersey wool, which is a nicer fabric than the Melton. That would be anywhere from post WWII up until about 1979. Ebay or Vintage Trends would be two good places to start looking. The link to VT is below. Be cautioned that they use the terms Kersey and Melton interchangeably. They know the difference, but make mistakes--it's easy to do. You will need to double check the quality of the coat with them. Jan can tell you about that.

Ebay is a good source if you know what you are looking for and the questions to ask. Just realize that most of the sellers have no idea of the date of the peacoat they are selling. Someone may have told them the coat looks like a 50s coat, or that it looks like a WWII coat (most common), so that is how they date and list the coat. Having read the article, you know what you are looking for, what the tag can tell you and the measurements to ask for. Good hunting.
