Partial punchline of a lost joke

Begging the bartender's indulgence, I'd like to state that I don't want to revive the joke, but to thank everyone for it.
I told my step-dad this joke, and not only had he not heard it, but he thought it was hilarious. Which is more than can be said of most jokes I've told him. Last week he was hospitalized with a failing liver and kidneys, and he has since then passed away. My mom, sister, and I were talking about him the night of the Fourth of July, and mom and sis mentioned the effects the drugs had had on him.

They talked of how "out of it" he was, when my sister mentioned that he had told her this AWFUL joke that was just not like him. I thought it was something his friends had told him. Mom chimed in that she had heard him telling it to sis, and was shocked also. She thought he had made it up, because it was the kind of thing he would do. I was oblivious until they said "chicken guts".

"Chicken guts"! How many jokes could he have heard about chicken guts in a month? So I confessed that maybe he had heard it from me. They didn't believe me until I started telling it. Oh, the looks on their faces. And after the punch line- oh dear. On the one hand, they thought it was was funny (sort of), that he heard it from me. OTOH, they were not amused by the joke. It wasn't funny, it was dreadful. "HOW COULD YOU?!"

No, they aren't old or normally prudish- but I shocked 'em. YAY!

The bottom line is, that joke has provided quite a bit of merriment in my family when we really need it. They have forbidden me from retelling it in their hearing, I've sworn to make it my mission to spread that joke, and they have accepted that my sense of humor isn't quite what they expect.

So for the Lounger who asked for the rest of the joke, the guy that knew it and spread it, and everyone else- thank you so very much. It provided a moment of hysterical laughter when we really needed it.
