I acquired this hat at an estate sale and wondered if anyone could give me more information about the hat. I believe it is fur felt based on the softness and that it was made prior to the factory closing in Ghiffa in 1981. The sweatband is leather and the hat band is scrunched a bit. I don't know if that was intentional.

It is not very easy to know when the hat was made, also because Panizza Royal and Panizza President were the most used brands at the end of the disposal of the Ghiffa plant. A photo of the label under the sweatband could help. No, the ribbon is to be fixed and is not intentionally scrounched, the hat has only been badly preserved.

I try to do my best, sometimes I can:)

Thank you, the information is helpful. I only paid $4 for the hat.

Two great additions, Panos. Panizza can be a bit hit and miss, but that Foulard is a super hat and the Sportman looks to be a winner as well.

Panizza is the least consistent in its quality of the Italian makers. If they got it right, they were fabulous, but sometimes it just isn't there. This one they got right.
Panizza in the colour Lampo (lightning). Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10,5 cm at the center dent. Weighs 105 grams with the felt being thin and dense. Lovely hand to the felt, almost like a chamois but not quite. The brim binding ribbon is extremely narrow with just about 2mm showing on the top and on the bottom.
Kreymborg was a menswear retail chain. It disappeared in 2000 after being around since 1891.

I picked up some hats that are interesting to me even if not my size. I always plan to let it go then when I see some quality specimens I fall back into original sin
panizza-1-jpg.291214

Panizza size 5 or 57 centimeters in Europe, 7 in the States. Internal measurements are 19.5x16 centimetres
panizza-2-jpg.291216

A production of the Panizza factory is the historical one so we are before the end of the Seventies.
panizza-3-jpg.291219

The hat is a magnificent gray color, Asbesto, with the ribbon, also in gray, Lapis, that goes in slight contrast with the felt.
panizza-6-jpg.291221

The felt is of medium consistency, unlined with the "Panizza" brand on the bottom of the crown
panizza-interno-completo-jpg.291220

Oddly, no definition of the quality of the hat and no indication of where it was for sale
panizza-5-jpg.291222

The hat is light and very malleable in a special color combination.
panizza-4-jpg.291223

These are the measurements: the brims are 6.5 cm, the ribbon 3.5 cm. and the crown is at the lowest point 10 cm.

A magnificent example of Italian headwear

Daniele, This is a real beauty! Great colors -> felt and ribbon combo. The felt looks fantastic -> finish, hand. Also really like the form.

That is a fantastic hat, Daniele. Love the colour and the slightly lighter ribbon. Is there no size label inside it? Judging by the measurements it's more like a 56 (o, dear;)).

I finally found a hat of this shape that somewhere carried the name given by the Italian youths of the 1950s and early 1960s: Mambo!
I'm dancing when I took the picture :)
One of them, my gym buddy, brought me a photo of him a few years ago wearing a hat very similar to this one.
mambo-panizza-1-jpg.300028

Panizza "Mambo" size 58cm or 7 1/4 in the US with a back bow. Inside measurements are:20x16.5 centimeters
mambo-panizza-2-jpg.300029

The hat is in good condition with some barely visible moth bites and a felt that is reborn after a steam bath with a brush.
mambo-panizza-3-jpg.300030

The color is a gray called by Panizza "Opale" with a black belt with a small bow on the back.
mambo-panizza-4-jpg.300031
The felt is of medium consistency and very solid in its shape. It was sold in Italy on the bank of river Po.

The hat unlined has a branded insert at the bottom of the crown

These are the measures: brims at 5.5 cm, the crown is at 9 cm. the lowest point and the ribbon is 5cm.
mambo-panizza-8-jpg.300035

An excellent example of Italian hat from the 1950s

Daniele, Super! It's really sharp looking. The felt looks (color, finish) great.
