Saturday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake caused many casualties and heavy damage in the cities of Manto and Portoviejo. Montecristi appears to be very close to both.
Thanks for the info, Alan. I didn't realize it was so close. It seems very serious. The worst since 1949 in an area with almost daily seismic activity! Not good at all :(

My little home-bashed Cuenca. Bought it at Panama Hat Mall as an open crown. What they didn't say was that it came with no sweatband. I bought a cheap bucket hat from a street vendor and had the missus take out the sweat and sew it in the hat. Braided horse-hair band with the "bow" in the back, which she sewed on as well. Shaped the crown with steam and two metal, nesting, mixing bowls for a telescope-type crown.

This is a super comfy, beater kind of lid. This was my second Panama-type purchase about a year agp.

I was sorry to read about the earthquakes as they have been reported as quite devastating.

This looks like a serviceable brisa Cuenca, and at this auction price, cheaper than any machine-made straw. I bid on it expecting not to win, rationalized that if I did happen to win it - gee, what a great hat for yard work at a great price. It may even turn out to be too good for yard work.

Saw that one as well. Not my size. I think that is a great get and I believe you're right, may be a little too nice for yard duty.
