Looks like Llano weave (Montecristi) to me, but I will admit to not being an expert. I did look at the center top (inception of the weave) on two of my own Panamas and the only thing different is the consistency of color in yours is much better, so I don't see patterns emerging from slight off-color straw. Maybe its just the lighting, maybe this one was processed through Cuenca and bleached, but it looks like a Llano weave to me.

Here is a very lovely Dobbs Panama that I picked up from Etsy a few months back. I believe it is a victim of dry heat. The straw has started to crack along the crease and the sweatband is showing tell-tale signs of dryness. It's such a beautiful hat with a really nice weave, but I'm a little worried that I have to treat it very delicately. Unfortunately, the crack has worsened since I've had it. I placed some tape on the inside of the crease to prevent further splitting. I'm hoping it holds well.

In an attempt to peek under the sweatband, I heard some crackling where the leather is starting to split from the reed stitching. I was going to modify the hat with a vintage taupe ribbon that I pulled from another hat, but I don't know if I could flip the sweatband without possibly damaging the reed stitching. Thus, I have two questions:

1. Are there any ways to preserve the straw? Is there some sort of oil or compound that helps to penetrate and treat the straw?

2. I've heard of certain oils for leather. What is a good brand to get?

Here's the ebay link. I hope the weave count is what the seller says it is. I emailed him and told him I wouldn't be happy if it wasn't. It was originally sold by Panama hats direct. I don't like the fact it has a liner. It will be pulled out and I will have it resized with a different sweatband.

It seemed like a decent price for what I got. Time will tell.

Ordered my first Monticristi from panama direct today. Havana wth larger brim. Fino grade.

Eager to see how this whole process goes. I liked all the options and seems reputable.
I'm pleased that they don't charge till they actually ship.

I bought a Stetson Panama from Delmonicos and am well pleased. This should be a nice upgrade and a better fit and brim width for me.

What's the deal w/ a LINER in a summer hat?

I have had two panamas finished & sold in Puerto Rico , both with liners, albeit with the white "mesh" material on the sides, arguably to facilitate airflow, but a solid (poly, I imagine) "satin" crown. It HAS to double the weight.
I've also seen a few vtg US panamas with this oddity, but only a few. [huh]

I know, go figure. It will come out on this one right away.

I am hoping it has the 1600 wpi as advertised. The best one I have now is around 800 and I think it's awesome. I will be surprised if it is though as I didn't think Panamahats direct even sold ones that high. If it's not and I don't like it, ebay is supposed to have a return policy if the item is not as described, so I could end up sending it back.
