what is the rationale of that?

You can click the links and find out why some forums do so. Some even have features in place prompting folks if the post is more than two weeks old.

Answering 12 year old posts for people who don't read the forum any longer seems kind of pointless. Especially considering that the pros and cons of Shangtung regularly get discussed.

It also creates clutter when old posts get bumped back to the front.

suppose someone would have put that same question about shantung today would there be anything wrong in answering?

No, that's why we have "ask a question, get an answer." "

The question had gone, by the way, unanswered then. If anyone using the search function would look it up and would want to add to it and new comments or information, would there be anything wrong ? There is nothing necrotic about this question and my answer.

...but for the fact that it has been asked and answered numerous times in other threads over the past twelve years.

I am very active in a saxophones forum and I cannot count the times that I encourage people, to follow up older posts.
The same spirit has to be used by the Administrator which merged a new question panama to a thread that has to be as old as the forum ( the oldest post in this thread is from 2006 !)

It was merged into this thread presumably to reduce clutter and keep like minded threads together.

I agree that this certainly looks like an authentic Panama. But, either way, you can wear it with pride. It screams "vintage" and is, really, a beautiful hat.

Hi guys..is it a good idea to merge my thread?...it seems now i cant find where my thread starts and ends...and when i get a reply i cannot easily find it anymore..i may be a novice at this but i sure would like some clarity.

Your concerns are the reason we try not to "ressurect" dead posts, especially ones that have beaten to death in the years since. Sorry your question got derailed.

I didn’t do that! Some administrator did! I don’t possess the powers and the access to do any of this.
I’ve had also a thread that I’ve opened (I’m new here) merged with another.

I suppose here the word is a place for everything and everything in its place.

You can still find your posts if you click on your avatar and click on “ content” there you find each single post.

the answers are sent to you and you will find then under the menu with a bell

But if we're new here then we don't know that a topic has been beaten to death for 12 years...

That's a fair question, Dotneck, and I hope no one took this discussion to mean that new members shouldn't participate. That's the last thing I would want to imply.

If you're interested in a topic, first do some searches and read all the old threads. As Milandro says, there's a lot of information here, although many of the photos have been "lost" over time. You will find lots of posts, and probably even dedicated threads, that cover the information you're interested in.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask your question in a dedicated thread, just like 1on1 did with his Panama hat question. If you have a question that doesn't seem to fit anywhere else, ask away in the "Ask a Question, Get an Answer" thread. You'll almost always get great advice either way. No one will beat you up for asking a question that has been asked many times before, and you will often be directed to appropriate threads where you can learn about whatever your interest is.

Some advice for the new folks - everyone is welcome here, and each new member brings fresh perspective. Sometimes that perspective may be a little out of tune with the overall theme and tone of this board, and usually, friendly folks will try to politely steer you away from landmines. Try to heed that advice. Think of it as visiting an acquaintance's home, lighting up a big old stinky cigar in their parlor, and being told, "Friend, we usually do our smoking on the front porch". Would you take that hint, or would you say, "Well I don't", prop your feet up on the coffee table, and puff away?

I was new here too, not terribly long ago, and was made to feel at home. We hope each of you will enjoy your stay here and will feel at home for quite some time to come.

Y'all take care,
Regan

I have bought two very vintage “ straw” cones. One looks like it could be a panama weave and the other ( the lesser quality one) has a label saying that it is made of Formosa (Taiwan) Paper. Ishime weave.

Any Idea what this Formosa paper is and more importantly is there a thread about blocking , starting from a cone, a straw hat ( Panama or otherwise?).

I have found this picture of Ishime weave published by mayserwegener

If you mean the image above “ it's in a older thread here “ https://www.thefedoralounge.com/thr...-and-straw-braids-for-mens-summer-hats.85313/
I would have followed up on that thread but I din’t want o be thought of resurrecting threads.
After what happened before, I am not really sure what to do about posting new information in older threads. Like the following

Mayser-Milz & Cie. "Exotic Straw Hoods and Straw Braids for Men's Summer Hats” /

I believe in the resurrection - so it’s all good to me. But yes, that is exactly what I was wanting. Thanks!

:) glad of having been of assistance. I found that link with google.

I am trying to find out more about straw hat making and the use of hat blocks but the search engine here is of not too much use ( on other fora I am a staunch defender of the search engine use and I’ve done my best here)

I have found something interesting on internet about Panama Hat hand blocking
