Excuse my ignorance , but how customizable is panama hat? I didn't do my panama homework properly. Is it possible to choose brim and crown size?
Thank u,
Paul

A panama is as customizable as any other hat. If you go to a hatter maker, you can get the crown, brim, ribbon and style of your choosing.

Great find Josh! How do you go about dating Knox panamas? The crest? I found this one (posted in the new hats thread) this weekend and the only thing I could find that might help with dating was the crest (other than the style)

It weighs all of 2 7/8 ounces

That's a fine one Roger. I was going to recommend the Knox thread for dating help but see the sticky for important hat threads is gone so can't provide a link for you.

Can the hatter customize the size somewhat and change the oval shape, of previously-finished panama hat, without making the brim go wacky? I'm just a smidgeon over a size and, longer than normal oval. Getting a well-fitting hat has been elusive for me so far.

Yes, a panama can be re-blocked to your size. It may also require fitting a new sweatband though.

If you go that option, I strongly suggest you have a band block made to your head size/shape.
High humidity and/or getting caught in a sprinkle may lead a straw to revert to its old ways.
Occasional use of a band block will help remind the hat who is supposed to be in charge.

Thanks, helpful info! How does one get a band block?

I got mine from Art Fawcett, in conjunction with a hat purchase.
If you contacted him with respect to having your current hat resized/reblocked, he would send you a conformer to get the exact size/shape of your head. He would then use that to make a band block.
I also use mine whenever I get caught in enough of a rain to soak the fur felt hat I am wearing. Helps the hat dry to "my" shape, not the shap it was originally mad to.
