I read an article today about Dita von Teese, and there
where some young girls who where giving they're comments

but what you would hear from them o my god.

I don't know if that is for typical dutch teenagers but they hated the pale, and they where really making comments like she's a gosth a spooky person, she has to have some sunlight, she's scary.
That she had to go for some cure in a tanning sallon and things like that.

I really like her pale skin and always making sure I wear sunscrean because I like to be pale.
It made me think are other people are looking and thinking the same way about me than about her.

Well i know that i should not listen to things like that but I was really shocked what they all said.

I know what you mean. I used to be called "Ms. Aspirin" in high school, and -not- in a good way either.

I honestly think it depends on the person. Some people look better with a hint of color, some people look better pale. I do not think that super dark tans or orangey skin looks good on anyone, but I have nothing against a nice natural-looking tan. In the summer I usually pick up some color if I'm outside, but in the fall/winter I stay pretty fair. I have auburn hair with quite a few freckles, but I do tan easier than most redheads. I also occasionally use the Jergens or Victoria's Secret self-tanners, or a bronzing powder, just to get a hint of color.

I think both can be beautiful so long as they are not overdone.

I think for most people the skin they were born with is the most beautiful. For me that would be transparent :) I actually look quite nice tan, but I take forever to tan and it fades almost immediately, that it isnt worth the effort. I got teased cruely a lot by my sun worshiping peers, but looking back at them, they all look ten years older than I do now! How's that for revenge ;)

Ladies (and gentlemen too), studies have suggested Vit D to be protective against certain forms of cancer, particularly pancreatic (which my grandmother died of, so I am am concerned about this) so my advice is to take a supplement daily, especially if you avoid the sun!

I love my pale skin when it decides to be evenly pale! A lot of times, I am splotchy. Pale here, pink there, red over, almost blue under...there are a few times when everything has matched from head to toe...those times I love the pale. I do have a self tanner that I love. I use it in the hottest summer weeks, it helps me not look so ghostly and get away with zero makeup. However to everyone else I am still pale even when I consider myself tanned.

I used to get tans in the summertime when I was in my 20's but stopped when I read that excess exposure to the sun caused skin cancers and aging skin. As a result, I am pale with a little color in my cheeks, but I stay out of the sun.

However, if I had my 'druthers, I would be tan, mocha, light brown, red brown -- colors I look really good in (and makes my teeth really white), if I didn't have to sit in the sun or put goop on me to get the look.

I once told a friend, than, in my next incarnation, if I cannot come back and have skin like Tina Turner (and legs!), then I don't want to come back.

This is totally the reason I like to be pale. I'm only half English, part Italian and part Ukranian also and the Italian genes in me are screaming to be browned! If I spend 20 minutes in the sun, I tan and it stays for a long time. I still have some tan on my chest from LAST summer (July 06!)

The common conception of a tan seems to be it being referred to as a 'healthy glow'? I look better pale and feel safer being pale as I know that (at least visibly) I have no sign of any skin cancers or issues :)

As for what was said about D.V.T higher up in the thread.. I think getting over the 'cool factor' of tanning is one of those young teenage things you either grow out of or grow up to embrace and become a tanorexic! lol

PS know which I'd rather look like!

Oh so fair

I have the unfortune of living in a Florida college town with lots of girls with that playboy bunny look. I can't tan bc I'm self conscious about sitting out in a bathing suit (don't you wish those things were never invented?), plus if I stay out in the sun I turn into a lobster and in almost unbearable pain for DAYS. I've tried the sunless tanners....but I just can't get it right. So, I gave up. I'm learning to embrace my ivory skin (and the freckles I do have...my mom told me they were angel kisses when I was a kid). However, even though I have this slight pang of jealousy when one of these girls walk by, I do love the classic portrayals of women with porcelein skin. (I'm such a hypocrit.) I can't wait for fair skin to come back into style. What I don't understand is if that for so much of fashion history milky white was the considered to be the ideal beauty, why did it suddenly go out of vogue and it's not considered beautiful anymore...when was the last time you saw a fair skinned Victoria's Secret model? Anyway...I'll get off my soapbox. I should just be happy my hubby likes my milky skin.

I think pale skin is the most beautiful. I tanned a bit during the summer and I really regret it! It's really difficult to keep up and try and get your face/body to look even. I tan really easily though, so it actually takes a lot of work trying to stay pale, expecially in the hot desert.

I think some girls can look great with a tan. As for me, I wouldn't know since I go from dead white to beet red with no stops in between. I've worn hats and stayed out of the sun for so long it's second nature to me now so I'm pretty much always pale. I think it suits me too.

I am a Winter...

Pale as the fallen snow...well, with freckles. I'm really fair but because of my oh-so-sensitive-to-UVs, even when I put on sunblock and reapply every hour(!), I still get freckles. :eusa_doh: I don't want to be tan, really, but I do love the outdoors a whole lot. I think I'm going to start using a parasol in the spring/summer of '08!

Hello all!

As this is my first post, I'd like to say hello:):eek:fftopic:

Tan or fair? I've always chosen fair -- partly for health, but mostly because I think I look best fair. My face became slightly tan one summer and I looked sickly! My skin turns a sort of yellow-gold color that just isn't flattering.
It's funny, I always get these looks of disbelief when someone hears I'm half Salvandoran.

Oh, me too! You should see my arms--a veritible galaxy of freckles there. Not on my face though--odd that.

I leave for Peru in a week. I'm going to break out the self-tanner again tonight to work on getting a teensy bit more color before I go and break out the skirts with no stockings again. Also, in a place like that, the paler you are, the more you get harassed by the local men.

As an adult, I tanned one full summer. I started my tan in the spring & was still fairly white by the end of September. I never tanned my face or neck or chest. I remember I started to tan the next year & decided to speed the process up & wore a sheer t-shirt when I was out in the yard & I ended up with a peeping tom, so I started keeping my clothes on outside.

Pale- I have the type of skin that gets blisters when I stay out in the sun too long, so I guess it made the decision for me. [huh]

Ah, I have just a light sprinkling across the nose and on my forehead. One of my friends says I remind him of vanilla bean ice cream...the flecks, ya know lol
