Further to my annual viewing of this Mitchum classic, it appeared to me that all the good guys wore thin-banded hats in the Open Road style while the baddies had much thicker hatbands. Is this a signifier in the semiotic sense....observations please!

Hmm? I'm not familiar with the movie but would venture to say that in most period films there wasn't any difference that I ever noticed. The thugs and the detectives wore similar hats in my memory.[huh]

It is on dvd and worth seeing.

dr greg, I have never noticed that before. I must take another look and see for myself. Did Mitchum's hat sport a thin or thick band?

From the looks of this scan, it looks as if RM has a thick ribbon on. Also it has a bound edge.

Mitchum wears the coolest looking raincoat in that movie...the scene in the club where he grabs the dossier with those tax documents..the coat just moves with him

I'll have to look at the hats again....
