A gripe AND item of interest...
Won an auction a couple of days ago on Goodwill.com. Paid, got confirmation email and all that, but for some reason I decided to check out the order details. There, underneath the breakdown of tax, shipping and handling was another charge for 23 cents marked "additional donation". Now, I don't recall being asked if I wanted to make this donation. I don't recall seeing it listed in the shipping and handling fees or anywhere else. I thought donations were voluntary. 23 cents isn't a lot, but still, who do they think they are, the government? What's next? Do they decide that as long as they have my info they get to take out a monthly "donation"?
I sent a message to the store expressing my confusion over the origins of this apparent forced charitability. Can't wait to see what they say.

I've never participated in a Goodwill auction, but at most auction sites you would pay a buyer premium of 20% or thereabouts above your winning bid.

Goodwill.com operates a lot like eBay as far as the auctions go. Never paid a buyer premium before. The amount "donated" was just the right number to round up the purchase to the next even dollar. This is the first time (to my knowledge, I'll have to look at old transactions) that they have done this.

Interesting. I buy from them occasionally so I’ll check to see if I unwittingly made a donation. Perhaps there was a way to opt out when you set up your account?

Okay, none of my transactions show any rounding up or charitable contributions.

As an aside, I bought this hat (“Clear Beaver”) in distressed condition to see if I could bleach it and then dye it to a new color. The bleach dissolved the hat and the brim separated from the crown in about ten minutes. I let the remnants soak overnight and they still aren’t bleached white like I had hoped. Another in my long list of failed home experiments.

FYI, if anyone is interested in a late 50s, early 60s Royal Stetson Gun Club hat with brown heathered felt, a stingy brim with a sewn underwelt, and a fairly low crown, there is one at a local antique shop for $50.

Oh, the ribbon is a multi-colored cloth item with various shades of brown, about 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" wide.

Not a screaming deal, but fairly priced IMO.

It has the "key hole" size tag 7-3/8 LO and fits me real well. I'm just not a stingy brim, low crown, kind of guy. The felt feels nice, and it has a dark brown sweat with the Royal Stetson designation embossed on it.

Sorry, I didn't think to take pictures.

If interested, send me a PM and I can give you the contact info for the shop. I bought a parabuntal straw there for $10 today. Not friends with the owner, but he recognizes me now as a hat collector.

Anything interesting in a size 7 for our Netherlands member?

Here is an Antique Store gripe about customer dishonesty I find really disappointing, especially as it is a fellow hat person.....
Last week I was trolling some of my usual antique haunts when I ran across a JC Penney Marathon from the fifties, fair condition, clearly tagged a 7 1/4. Now this is a booth that sports vintage clothing.....so far no problem....THEN I look at the tag and it reads Stetson Stratoliner gives some details including the store that originally sold it and appears unworn, very clean..etc.....including size 7 3/8..........Booth mistake? NO....unequivocally...NO...they had too much detail that did not at all match the Marathon.......someone just wanted the Stetson for a cheaper price and switched the tags....:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:. Now to make matters worse they were only asking $59 for the Stetson......so it was a deal to begin with but they just had to switch tags to get it even cheaper.......really really makes me mad:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
People are such total JERKS sometimes......And of course a hat is a hat to the front counter....they never noticed....which is their fault too........

No accounting for integrity. Did you get the Marathon?
