Interesting question, Mojave Jack. Seems like buffalo hair would make a felt that's coarser than many others, but whadda I know? At least there's plenty of it around with the number of buffalo now being raised for commercial consumption.

Having experience with Orvis in the past, I would say the $149 fedora is overpriced and quality is below average. Most of what I have purchased from them has been on sale and of ok quality but not worth anywhere near the original prices. I can't see why buffalo would be better in any way than beaver or hare. Buffalo is an attractive word that can sell alot of things. From hamburgers to medicines, the word buffalo seems to sell products.[huh]

I'll stick with hare beaver and nutria for my hatting needs.

Nutria?! The giant rats?

How does nutria fur felt compare to other felts? With the number of nutria running rampant over France, you'd think we'd be overrun with French hats (or chapeaux).

Well... from what I have seen they make a pretty good felt when mixed with Beaver. Knox and cavanagh used to use Nutria with Beaver and Hare. It apparently makes a hat that is more felxable. Good for dress hats. different hats different blends. You want a stiff cowboy hat that lets the rain roll off (after fully getting soaked of course, as fur felt is a big sponge) go for all beaver.

Don't y'all mean we should be overrun with LOUISIANA hats? Nutria are from here, actually brought here for their fur. Then the fur and trapping business basically went Tango Uniform. Fine fedoras out of nutria would be one way to get rid of the overpopulated boogers. Or, as the Cajuns out in the country call them...."nutral rats"

They're everywhere, even here in metro. New Orleans.

The Buffalo hats that you see from Stetson are actualy made by another factory for them . Its a much courser fur not as fine as rabbit or beaver . It works for the western line , not the dress line for Stetson .

Here's one I throw out to the Lounge. I had no idea Orvis was in the fedora business. Thoughts?

That hat looks almost identical to one my husband bought in Austria. It's his "everyday" hat. The only difference is his band is woven leather and some type of twine, with a grosgrain ribbon over the join. His hat is also made of hare. This is a wonderful color, as it never shows dirt and goes with everything. This isn't a "suit hat", but if you are looking for a casual fedora it's a great choice (from a female's perspective. :) )

I've ordered from Orvis before. Their quality is fine, though as mentioned they are generally overpriced on non-sale items. Their shipping is also quite high, and they're not the quickest. However, we paid 120 Euros for my husband's hat, so the prices are almost identical (of course, Europe is expensive and so is Orvis, so not sure if that's a good comparison!). Orvis is also good about returns; I've never had any trouble with them.

Apparently these buggers are getting around!

How about a few bounty programs? Has that been tried? .17 HMR oughta do the trick! I guess it's hard to shoot them in the metro area, though.

Just one more reason that we need hats to make comeback. "Hey, I gotta wear a hat, man! I'm doin' my part for nutria population control!"
