This was a fun read on Vegas. Neat to see the old pics. I will be able to compare in a few days when we go there this week. Any tips or must sees?

At the Bellagio: the musical dancing fountains out front and the arboretum or harvest room to the right of the front desk & take a camera.

The Talking Bacchus and the Atlantis show in the Forum Shops at Caesars.

The night time volcano erruption in front of the Mirage.

The Syrens versus pirates battle in front of the Treasure Island.

"The Rat Pack is Back" is at the Greek Isles.

The car museum at the Imperial Palace.

Have a brew at the Brewery in the Monte Carlo.

Maybe try the Crab cakes at Buzio's in the Rio and catch the floating mardi gras parade. The wine bar is nice too, downstairs.

Go to the top of the Stratosphere, ride the rides if you dare.

Check out the lions at the MGM.

Stroll the shops in the Venetian to St Marks Square.

The Vodka bar at the Mandalay Bay.

Check out the atrium at the Luxor (Nine 747's can fit in there.)

Have a steak dinner at the Steak house in Circus Circus.

Shoot a full auto submachine gun with or with out silencer at the gun store. (To sound knowledgeble call it a supressor. You may also refer to it as a "can" in some circles.)

Check out some of the antique stores I think the Red Rooster is pretty good.

Go to down town for the night and see the 3 block long big screen canopy thingy. Go to Binions and get a picture taken with the million dollars in $10K bills. They also have a good steak house and others rave about the Chinese restaurant there too.

Valentino's in the Venetian is a fav of mine if you are winning!

+1, ma'am--I stayed at TI the year after it opened, and it was the best place I've stayed in down there in over a decade of visiting--then MGM had to go and trash it out and ruin everything...:rage:

You can get "sleaze" anywhere--style like the old TI had is a whole lot more difficult...

My point illustrated--no offense intended, John, just that I thought TI was better pre-MGM "makeover". Different person, different tastes...

It is a free show, I liked the original Pirate battle better but it was old and tired after so many years. The Syrens were ok, but if you've never seen the old show then the new show is all you've got. I'd say to the newbies, check it out and make up your own mind.

Personally the TI as a casino did not impresss me at any time.

Ooooh... ok well if we're talking about the gambling... here's the scoop.

For great slots go to Imperial Palace. They even have Vegas Celebrities (ie imposters) on Saturday night at the tables.

For great table time... 1 mile off the strip (but I think there's a shuttle) is the Palms hotel (home of the World Poker Tour). For a good "bargan" table you cross the street to the The Gold Coast. And for fun bars and food (not to mention the "parade in the sky") head across the street to The Rio. I haven't had a chance to eat the buffet there but I hear its amazing. I can personally give a thumbs up to the bar service! *wink*

And don't forget they've opened a Playboy's Club at the Palms.

We were in Vegas for the first time a couple months ago, and stayed at Circus Circus. Rode the 'Duce' down to Fremont St. and saw what was left of the old town under the canopy, and stayed long enough to see the overhead light show, and play one slot machine. Won about 20 pounds of nickels (at least that's what it felt like). :eusa_doh:

Amazing town. Amazing trip.

Here are several old photos from a trip my great uncle, Briscoe Brown, took to Las Vegas in the late 1920's or very early 1930's.

Nice

These are some awesome old pictures. I love all the architecture and signs in Vegas and it'a a shame that alot of that is gone now. I love fremont street especially. I also love old signs, have a ton of pictures I've taken myself around the metroplex, some of which are gone now and I love old googie. People don't seem to be against putting any kind of creativity at all into thier storefronts these days (for those exceptions, you know who you are) Great stuff. Thanks for posting them.

Las Vegas and Change

Las Vegas is what it is as a mecca for change in the US tradition. Las vegas reinvents itself periodically by the vision of the entrepenuers that build the new casinos and come up with the new themes such as Steve Wynn and Bob Stupak. They have an idea and persue it, and experiment on a truly grand scale. Sometime things work well other times they don't. With the strip as the main area the concentration of what people around the world think as Las vegas, they aren't making more area so the old is demolished to make way for the new and tha is why so much of the old stuff disappears as the concepts and ideas of a place becomes shabby and worn out, the time is seen to make the change.

Las Vegas is a Detroit in a way, where an average guy or gal can get a job and raise a family with out much in the way of an education, the line work has been replaced by the numerous workaday jobs at or for the casino.

Las Vegas has had it population double every decade, i am not sure i want to see it in 2016!

Don't mind at all. I'm glad you like them so much. I am really lucky to have so many old pictures from my great uncle (and fortunate that he lived such an interesting life). I'm more than glad to share.

What casino do you work in?

With out much of an education as in a High school diploma or equivilancy such as what is call a GED will allow you some decent paying jobs. This is as opposed to other areas where you will find it impossible to get a job that pays as well without a college degree. Because of the competion for what was an ordinary job, now you need a BA or BS for a lot of positions in the LA area and still not make much.

Also if you talk to people that work in casinos, the majority seem to be from somewhers else. I have meet very few people born and breed in Nevada in all of my trips there.

Now how you can come up with the idea i am saying you don't get an education in Nevada, that seems like a stretch to me.

Thats why I was asking for clarification, this remark [Originally Posted by John in Covina

I was also in the midst of a major case of insomnia and hadn't slept in 2 days, another reason I was asking for clarification.

I am not a casino worker, I am a Union Electrician, which is a 5 year apprenticeship and school program. I was not born here, but moved here back when I was in 2nd grade, thats 25 years, long enough to be considered a native by anyones standards, in any state.

:eek:fftopic: And unfortunately, not to be a pain, but you have proved my point about people thinking Vegas is just the Strip and Down Town by asking me what casino I work in and stating "talking to people who work in the casinos". ARRGGG :rage: There is a great big city here!! This is to everyone!! We don't all live and work in the casinos, all the lights you see when you fly in that are not from the casinos, those are actual houses and other business.
Sorry, that is just such a sore spot with me.

You're being touchy and taking offense for no reason other than being thin skinned and too tired!

Relax

I knew from your post you did not work in a casino and was pushing your buttons with that deliberately.

While in Las Vegas I have visited a number of antique shops and antique malls. I have been to several of the Town Pump Liquor locations and have actually walked from the Gun Store past UNLV back to the Strip in the summer so yes I know there is more to LV than the casinos. I have driven around LV and henderson. Gone to the Dam, To the mountains and around.

It is now huge, I first went in 1984 or 85 and It was not even close to what it is now the population was a 1/4 of what it is now.

I haven't made it to the Natural History Museum that is supposed to be really a great one.

Figure it this way, if I go to San Francisco I am going to go to all of the popular touristy places because I haven't seen them. if I visit Napa, I'll be there for the wineries, Berlin, I'll go see the Wall. It's not because the regular stuff isn't there nor that it ain't great it is because that is not what's in the tour books.

You want people to know Las Vegas for what it offers other than the casinos, you gotta tell us and write about what is cool and neat and good to see with friends!

Although i got to ask, how big would Las Vegas be if there were no casinos? There is a good chance that it might not be there at all. It was small, started by the railroad, bit the hand that feed it. Barely survived until they built the dam. When the dam was finished they were having problems until the legalized gambling comes in. The annual Helldorado Days was invented as a tourist draw prior to legalized gambling.

It really is. We walked down to it from Fremont street (a LONG walk, by the way! ), but it was worth every step.

HIGHLY recommended!!
