Airforce personel in many countries seem to have had some liberties with what they chose to wear in the olden days. A perk of the Golden Age glamour of being a flier to flaunt some individuality perhaps? Many movie stars who enlisted gravitated to the airforce like Clark Gable, James Stewart, Sabu and others for example as befitting their image. The Luftwaffe pilots seemed to be able to wear what they liked as far as jackets were concerned including captured US and British jackets. Even high ranking officers had custom made uniforms. Luftwaffe chief Herman Goering is a prime example with his over the top operatic uniforms.
