Does anyone have Vanson's Luftwaffe Great Coat? I would like to hear any thoughts you might have on it especially the quality of the Firenze medium weight leather vs the heavy cowhide.

I have both hides from Vanson. Firenze is thinner and the finish is more on the surface, so the patina is in the way it chips away at the edges. Still I'm glad I have Firenze on a Teton because I think it might be too heavy otherwise. I would take competition in every case except if weight is an issue, which I think it could well be with that coat.

Do you end up looking like this if you get the heavyweight cowhide?

Those greatcoats in leather are quite intimidating...I wish they made coats in wool, then Id grab one

When I was young I was in NYC with no warm coat so I bought a West Point cadet great coat in a second hand store. The problem with wearing a coat like that is that it makes too much of a statement. When you're walking down the street, you feel like people are clearing a path for you. I don't want my clothes to make me feel that way.

I do! I would love it if people looked at me and thought twice about getting in my way! The coat in the op is not a great coat. At least, not as I understand them - aren't they always full length? It does, however, look a lot like the photos I have seen of pp jackets worn by WWI era German flyboys (werecthey Luftwaffe that early?). I would rather like one of these myself. Looks like a great alternative to sheepskins of the Irvin/B3 variety for wearing over a suit jacket.

Just come to my town in anything that nobody wears around here, it doesn't care what. Yesterday I was in my u-boat jacket and some people was turning their heads to watch. A German leather great coat in my town would be too much fun :)

One thing about London I really like it's you can wear whatever you want and nobody cares. Nobody looks at you.

I don't think you could find that in a store--unless vintage of some sort.

But the Crombie great coat is quite similar to that, and I'd say the Crombie is a little more practical

Don't forget Crombie is a brand and not a style, much like Stetson hats.
