So I am going to get a Silverbelly cut down Stetson re-blocked and I want a new ribbon; something contrasting. I asked for a Brown and thought the color contrast would be pretty good, thoughts?

I would never have thought of it but I like it.

To my mind it should be a) nice and wide and b) something with some color and shine to it, i.e. not a dark-chocolate brown or anything really dark like that.

Maybe something like Art would call "Mocha" ribbon in about 16-18 ligne or so...

It depends on the shades involved. But yes it can work. ;)

That's about as right as can be.

There are few (if any) absolutes as to color combinations. Guidelines, sure, but nothing etched in stone. There's really no way of knowing how colors will work together until you put them together and take a look.

And then there's factors such as ribbon width and style of hat (crown dimensions and profile, brim width, etc.) that might also affect how the colors work in combination. A ribbon color that might look just right in a narrower width might be a tad much in a larger width.
