One Man's Search For A Cafe Racer

This has become the central preoccupation in my life. About ten years ago, I recommended my buddy pick up one of these. The largest size was too small on me. We lost touch and he called me about six months ago and mentioned that he still loves the jacket. I live in Manhattan, NYC and made the rounds to the usual and customary places. The names don't warrant mentioning as I was early in the learning curve. Then I discovered that Schott was a reputable maker and carried a ton of styles. Union made and based in Jersey. Good deal. I live around the corner's from Dave's an authorized seller and went to try on a 141. Too short and it fit funny. I heard they made a long but didn't want to chance ordering one. I found a place on Lexington Avenue that carried the 660 and I was unimpressed with the leather. I bounced around looking for other makers and I was still pedestrian in my pursuits so I found a few Belstaff's. Too short and run way small (even the "pure motorcycle" line runs small). A handful of motorcycle gear makers; too short, no style to me, looked cheaply made. I read a ton of stuff and learned that Fox Creek makes respectable riding gear but I'm not a rider and am not crazy about big bi-swings or laces or pronounced kidney panels. I began to get pissed off but as fate would have it, I had to come out to Los Angeles on business/pleasure in mid-January. If there was ever a land of cafe racers this is it and I thought I'd find one here. It's now mid-March and I'm still in the LA area, Santa Monica but have given up hope of finding anything in a brick and mortar. My tale of woe in the City of Angels:

I went to Deus Ex Machina on Venice Blvd. and they led me to a handful of places whose names I can now barely remember and many of whom I've forgotten. Glory, Chuck's Vintage, Roland Sands (I drove forty minutes to their store only to find the 3xl's were too short and most of their jackets were taken to a show in Indianopolis), a couple of places that stocked Dainese and similar and every place I saw that looked like it might carry leather shoeslaces or better. No luck. I even went to some places I'd hang my head in ignominy for having entered- the Levi's Store, JCrew's Stockton, Superdry, True Religion, Diesel and more. The xxl's and even 3xl's were small and just felt like a bummer.

I even got to try on a Schott 141 long in a size 48 and 50 at a store on the Venice Boardwalk. The armhole is too low and digs into my bicep. I'm a short 6'4", weigh around 240, with about 15 pounds on me that I could live without. I've learned that my chest actually measures a shade over 48" so one would think a 48l would fit. It never does. The only thing I have come to realize is that my arms are long and pretty thick and for whatever reason the armhole to the end of seam measurement always feels too short so I end up with jackets with extra room in the chest and although the armhole sits low, I deal.

I finally ended up at a RRL store on Melrose where I saw their repro. I liked the looks of it and asked if they had an xxl. The XL was said to be big but it was too tight. It sported had a higher armhole than any other jacket I tried so I had momentary pause for hope. For whatever reason, they did not make that jacket in a xxl. It was more than I wanted to spend but my will was bending. The guy at the store wanted to help and told me about The Real McCoys and said I should try Self-Edge. I don't have the budget for Real McCoys and laughably, at some point, I even got sent to Chrome Hearts- for around 5k they might make me a jacket although they have no idea how long it will take and admit they are never delivered in a timely fashion. Tacky, cheesy and strangely cool for some people but not me. Way out of my budget. Then got sent to a place called Silver Threads in Malibu. They sell jewelry but a guy there said he'd make me a jacket on the side. Not happening.

The Self-Edge guys were very, very nice and said they would ask the Himel Brother's guy if he felt like making a jacket. Apparently, he was back in Canada and might be up to make a jacket. They didn't know how much it would cost. I balked and feared it would be out of budget and they didn't have a racer to look at in the store. I went to Hollywood Trading Company or something like that and they are very nice but ask such high prices I wanted to take a swing at them. A Fidelity racer that looked shiny and just fit me awfully they were trying to get $750 for and I just said no. I picked up a size 50 Brooks on ebay for $112 and got it shipped here to Cali. I can wear it but the armhole is low and it is not the sanctum sanctorum of Cafe Racers I so desperately seek. I've been to at least 30-40 places out here. Then I ended up here on this forum and have been lurking some.

Now I've been able to narrow it down to the following- Aero, Alexander's, Good Wear (if I can stomach a 15 month wait), Lewis Leathers, Diamond Dave, Lost Worlds (representing NYC) and forgive me if I've forgotten any of the worthy players. If it's of interest to anyone, Stronghold on Abbott Kinney Blvd. will be carrying Lewis Leathers in the coming months. They said two months ago that it would be about two months and I just called them and they said it's going to be about two months. I do believe at some point they will carry Lewis Leathers for all those interested. They're a bit impressed with themselves over there but after seeing what some places ask for crap, I can deal with the passionate indifference of those employed at Stronghold.

In any case, I'm dying to pull the trigger on a jacket although I'm still not clear on what materials are best i.e. horsehide vs. steerhide. I really have come to love the Buco J-100 but I am worried about getting a jacket that's long enough. Being tall, I don't want a jacket that's not below my belt. They just don't look good to my eyes. I am also worried about getting a jacket that's going to fit me funny around the armhole. The one custom leather jacket (a blazer- I'm from NYC, reared in the Bronx and NJ so forgive me) I got made I recall the tailor telling me that he had to recut the armhole three times. I suppose I'm thicker in build than wide so maybe that makes a difference as well as the arm length.

Thus far, I sent Alexander Leathers an email about a week ago and have not heard back. Good Wear is a bit pricey for me and I can't wait a year. I'm also hesitant to do business across the pond for fear of having to shell out a $100 to ship back a jacket that might not fit.

This is not a manifesto; this is a plea to any and all that would care to aid and abet my search. I am willing to take suggestion and direction and if anyone knows a brick and mortar in NY or LA that's worth a visit, do let me know although I'm not holding my breath given the niche here and the size I'm looking for.

Thank you in advance for reading this and I look forward to any input.

Look at Johnson Leather Company in San Francisco. Their website is not so great, although I understand their product is. Although I have no personal experience with JL, several other members do and have been very happy. Ask the owner to send you a size 50 test jacket, if that is the size that you think you need. Should you consider an Aero, maybe call Wade or Carrie at Insurrection in Seattle and request a test jacket.

Langlitz. Portland Oregan. Maje jackets fir Bruce Springsteen . Thats good enough for me. Langlitz leathers. They have 2 racer styles, they make them from scratch for you. They endorse goat hide. Its fantastic. Call them, get a catalogue. Look up langlitz japan for ideas on how to customise, as its an old school company the website in Portland is average. Service is awsome, money back if your not happy.

Thanks for chiming in so quickly. I will check out Johnson and Langlitz for sure. Do you know the approximate price points for the Langlitz? I appreciate your input Bunyip, Major and Fanch.

I thought in your case, a test jacket might be worthwhile as I sense that you are not a standard size. Keep in mind that Insurrection has several brands of Cafe Racers, although they prefer a very snug fit. Their top brand is Aero by a bunch IMO. Most of my experience is with Aero and love their jackets. Aero is best known for their FQHH utility jackets.

Alan, who is Johnson Leathers in San Francisco, is the greatest. I'm having a jacket made by him right now. I wish I could go in for fittings; but since that's impossible, I've sent emails, called on the phone, received a test jacket to try on for size, and even could have had a cloth mock-up made if necessary. I apologized for bugging him (although I know other guys are probably even worse), but he laughed and said he enjoys custom work.

Just pick up the phone and tell him what you need. End of story.

I checked out Insurrection/Thurston-Bros at some point. Not sure why they are shifting to Thurston-Bros. but I found it ironic that what appears to be the most knowledgable group of vintage leather/repro people around are in rainy Seattle. I like the Aero horsehide numbers. Especially liked this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/AERO-LEATHE...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 that sold on ebay awhile ago. No bi-swing and no kidney panel. 29" long. A size 46 and the listing said it would fit a 44-46 but the chest is 52". Not sure how that works but that patina on the horsehide gave it a black/brown feel with a bit of sheen which I dig. I think I will email Carrie and will give Diamond Dave a call as well. I just got off his cap company website and he looks like a sleeper. Strikes me as a genuine devotee type and his J-100 repro looks like it has the same patina as the Aero I linked to.

I'm a short 6'4"

I don't think everyone else see's it that way Dave!

Reading through that I could totally feel your pain. It seems you are looking at a custom job. In which case Fanch has probably already given you the best advice you're gonna get. From reading posts here, I understand that Johnsons make you a test jacket (is it in cotton?) to try on before they make you the real thing. If I'm correct here (I hope so, I think I am) then what could be better than that? They'll also willing to hunt down whatever type of leather you want, and having seen a a few of their creations on these pages if I was in your shoes I wouldn't hesitate. I hope you can put an end to this saga soon Dave - and once you do be sure to post some pics here

All the best

Vespizzare- I will check out Johnson right now. Since I'm in SM, maybe I would even consider making a pilgrimage to SF for a proper fitting.

Cheers,

Dave

Johnson's website isn't much to see- there's one Cafe Racer that's clean, N-200-AF, great price but there's one pic that's about 2" x 2".

Saying a chest is a 52 means it measures 26"x2, laid flat. That equates into a size 48 really. The general rule o' thumb is pits, laid flat, x2-4". 26"x2=52"-4"=48.
I'm not sure Good Wear is even an option for a 50/52. I know a few years back, John broke the news to me he didn't go that large. I had to go to Aero as they were one of the few who would.
Are you sure you're a 50-52? What are the numbers of something you already own?

I'll definitely post pics of whatever ends up on my waiting back. Thank you for your input and I'm glad to know someone feels my pain. ;)

I thought you were in New York. I'm in Santa Monica too! Anyway, that's just what I did on a previous jacket. I called and made an appointment, then flew up for the day. Check out Johnson Leathers in the "search" function above. I, and a couple other guys, have written about their experiences with JL.

If their website didn't suck, you couldn't just call the owner.

Hey Butte,

Your avatar looks familiar. I've certainly benefited from your postings and I appreciate you sharing what you know so readily. I do know that a 52" chest generally equates to a 48; what I didn't understand was why the seller stated it would fit a 44-46 on both ebay and Styleforum where I also found his listing. I also found it odd that an Aero 46 would have a 52" chest. Is that standard for them on a racer? To answer your question, no I don't believe myself to be a 50-52. My actual chest, when measured with a tape measure around the nips is 48" almost exactly. A standard 48" long should fit me save for the aforementioned problem with armholes.

The Brooks racers I picked up on ebay is a 50 and is about 53" in the chest. With just a t-shirt on underneath and the jacket open, it's a bit roomy (the chest pockets are a bit wider out than I'd like them) but I can't get my arms in the sleeve with anything other than tight t-shirt. Zipped up and if I stand straight up, I fill it out more but could do a 48 if the armhole wasn't so low and the sleeves were a bit roomier. If memory serves me from sleuthing around here, you're a tall guy as well, correct? Do you have any similar issues?

Thanks to everyone for such swift and helpful feedback. I have the feeling this place could become a nasty habit.

Hey Vespizzare,

I live in NYC but came to LA in mid-January on business and to write a book I've been contracted to write. I'm still here for probably another month. You know what I've been doing instead of writing. Searching for a f**king racer jacket. What do you all think of Diamond Dave's Buco racer? Any feedback or would I be the guinea pig?

I don't know your situation; but if you can go in and get fitted, to me that's a no brainer. I don't like ordering jackets online that turn out not to fit.

You possibly could wear the 48 Ventura I sent back to Good Wear. It's very hard to tell from the info here so far. I'm 6'-4" and have long arms too. Getting a jacket I'm thrilled with has taken years and many attempts. I got it last week.
Cafe racers can be tough. They often have skinny arms for riding. I've seen that, and I'm no power-lifter with big thick arms.
Get something you have that you can wear what you'd wear with the new jacket. Measure it, and post up the numbers. The most you'd have to lose on the Ventura is shipping if it doesn't fit.
Lots of sart folks here, and some great suggestions so far. I have an office in Santa Monica. Small world. :)

I saw your Ventura and it's not a racer but a stellar looking jacket. It just appears too short for my taste at 24.5 down the back. Years and many attempts is something I am slowly becoming familiar with. I would consider going to Lost Worlds when I get back to NYC but I just read that they don't do fittings. Maybe I can sweet talk the guy as a fellow dog advocate. Put in an email to Langlitz and going to call Diamond Dave tomorrow. The roads appear to converge on Santa Monica- I was at the SM airport theater the other night and thought that would be a great location for a vintage leather store especially given the flight motif (said the obvious, redundant man).

I own jackets from both Langlitz Leathers and Johnson Leathers - each makes a superb jacket. Both companies focus primarily on motorcyclists but can customize as needed to make you happy. Both of my jackets from JL are for street wear only. My LL jacket is a riding jacket, used for that purpose only. I'm guessing that a basic made to order Langlitz, in either cowhide or goatskin is running somewhere around $1,000 these days. If you have them make you a jacket, and end up not being happy with it, they'll either make it right, or fully refund your money with no questions asked. You'll only be out the money to send it back to them. Johnson Leathers can do a custom jacket for quite a bit less with the final price being dependent on the hide you choose. The Johnson Leather website definitely does not do their products justice. They've made two jackets for me. One in cowhide based off of their M-200 and the second in horsehide based off of their M-200L. Their craftsmanship is every bit as good as Langlitz. I'm not sure what the turnaround time is like at LL these days, JL is probably a bit over a month. If you do decide to go with Langlitz, I would suggest you give serious consideration to their goatskin, especially if your only wearing the jacket for walking around. The stuff is tough as nails, but feels fully broken in from day one.

Good luck!
