On Retirement And Hats

"]No such thing as retirement for me.
Work til I die.
On to the next adventure...

I agree with you on that! People ask when I plan on retiring and I tell them when they drag my dead body out! Love my job so I see no reason to retire. And I'll just keep wearing whichever hat strikes my mood that morning.

I just can’t follow you there. I enjoy my job at times, but there are so many other pursuits that work interferes with that I enjoy more. I think some (me) are just better adapted to a life of leisure.

Two sides of the same coin there, I agree with both. As someone previously said, if you are in a mundane, boring job, why would you work on unless financially forced to. But if you thoroughly enjoy work and want to work on, just do it. It will most likely stave off dementia.

Do old age like Arnold Schwarzenneger. ;)

Of course, the article is pushing the movie, but it might be worth seeing just for the inspirational factor.

Here’s a random paragraph from the article (note: Arnold is almost 72):

“We’re [embracing] the reality of what it means to be a person of a certain age who is called upon to be heroic. I love that. I always liked stories like Rooster Cogburn and True Grit, things like that—flawed heroes are so much more interesting than young, perfect ones to me. And Arnold looks great. There were so many women on the set who were like, ‘Oh my God, this is the best Arnold ever looked.’ It’s different from Mr. Olympia—he was a god, but there’s something about him at this age. He has this regalness.”

As I enter my 60s, I'm looking for all the inspiration I can get.

Couldn't agree more GHT. If the job bored me or becomes irritating, then I would look to retire. But, I do enjoy the job and the people I meet, so until the time I either hate the idea of going to work or something health wise happens, people will see my smiling face LOL

Just found this thread and as fairly new retiree, I'm going to chime in a little.

What can I say? I love it! I retired at 50 and never looked back. I'm 53 and get to spend time with my wife, travel, and do as I please. My job kept me away from home a lot. Bought new houses I never got to enjoy, missed anniversaries and birthdays, and when they time came, I didn't blink. When you travel over 7 million miles on business, you know when it is time to retire.

I feel better in retirement than when I was working. My health is excellent, and I'm in better shape by just sleeping, eating better and hitting the gym daily.

As for hats, I wear them more now than I ever did and I get to enjoy them.

Life in retirement is awesome!

I thought that I was going to miss my job, but the day after retiring, all I could think about was hitting the Waffle House[emoji1]

Don't get me wrong, I loved my job, but I also knew it was time for me to give back to my family who supported me for all those years.

Congrats on the retirement. It is good news to hear you are enjoying it.

I retired much over a decade ago and it did not take. I found it too hard to adapt to not working that I was driving my wife crazy. She reminded me she did not marry me to have a 24 hour side-kick. I took up another profession (completely different) and have not looked back. A second career has allowed me the luxury of being able to choose and to enjoy what I do. I like the challenge of striving to be world class at work. I like the urgency. I like that the more youthful around me challenge me to be current and daily. Mostly I appreciate being able to give back to others.

Retirement is different to us all. I tell folks I had to retire to work hard.

Best to all the retires and to those who are counting the minutes. Eric -

I used to have one those retirement counters on my phone and it drove me crazy. I uninstalled that thing[emoji1]

I rarely look at it, and also use it for other work related tasks.
Every now and then when I’m having a bad day at work my wife ask me how many days I have left. She’s a great woman!

I can completely understand. I have done a few things here and there, but mostly on a contract basis, so I have no commitments to fulfill on a long term basis.

I agree 100% that retirement is different for every one of us. I have worked all my life, first farming as a kid, then the Army, and then my past life. I get a kick every time I get that Social Security statement in the mail. It reminds me how long I have worked to be able to enjoy the things I do today.

I have many friends who didn't handle it well.

I dropped into my office to give my boss a bottle of whisky I brought home from Scotland. It was fun to see the gang and catch up. While we were not close as my work was largely solo so we never worked side by side much, they are a great bunch of folks. The win was visiting and having zero thoughts of missing work. I left there thinking …"well, I guess I really am done with work, or at least this work." It was good, closure as they say these days. The young fellow that fills my job now, whom I had not met exclaimed...."I am so glad I got to meet the legendary Bob." It was good for an old fellow's ego.
