I have a couple of these heavy G.I. coats...

About 12 years ago I had one just like that. It's a great coat and when they say that it's heavy they mean it. Great for those long walks through wet nighttime streets. Neat!:eusa_clap

If anyone is looking for one I have a few to spare. Let me know!!

Great movie!

I loved that film... Hanks was perfect for that roll! Great clothes and it was all very well done!

I'm a double breasted man... I have five 30's double breasted coats and one single from the 40's. My favorite is from Canada, it only cost me $60. Canadian ($.50c American lol) it's dark blue, double breasted, nice wide peaked lapels... it's cut like a suit coat but, heavy and long! The best coat I have!

Not the best photo of the coat but, you can see some of it... I wore it to the QM last year... that's me with two buddies of mine.

It's a really nice cool day today, I may put on a few coats and take some photos for you guys.

PS. Ray, that's cool you found a WWII Army coat... I've wanted one for a wile... I need one to go with my Class A's!

I just won this on eBay yesterday:

From the description:
"Genuine WW2 American Army Overcoat. Wonderful Heavy wool, double breasted overcoat guaranteed to keep out any cold this winter. Hard to find small size of 34R this coat comes in almost perfect condition with the only flaw being a simple to repair slight tear on one of the lapels. This coat has bundles of character with very detailed buttons, epaulets, and huge lapels, adjustable back to relax or tighten the fit of the coat and let us not forget it got through a World War! Any questions and I’ll help where I can, and all measurements are in inches. Thanks and good luck."

I saw that auction and simply loved the style of this overcoat!
You've the big luck it's way to small for me!:p :D
But I found a nice grey DB swiss military topcoat which makes, if I'd change the buttons, a great Mike Sullivan close enough! Beside that it goes with my brown Mallory 15 and my blue 40s suit!

The seller says its from the early 30s!

Regards,
Henrik

Actually looks a lot like a Donna Karan 100% cashmere
coat I picked up at a consignment shop a couple of years
ago (except, I think, for the cuffs). I found the length
unusual, but have come to like it. And what a feeling,
wearing that much cashmere. It's like walking around
wrapped up in the ultimate security blanket.

I like older overcoats, too. I have a couple that must be from
the 20s or 30s. The secret pleasure of the really old ones is
some wild lining material. Hope to post some pictures some time.

I've got a camel wool overcoat. It's an old single breasted job from raleigh's (raleigh haberdasher) of Washington, DC. I picked it up at the local hospital thrift shop for 35 bucks. Fits very well, though I wish the armholes were cut slightly higher.

Okay, I opened the closet

My brown herringbone overcoat appears to have many of
the features of the one in "Road to Perdition". It is an extremely
heavy coat- easily the heaviest I have (including leather).
Apologies in advance for the crummy photos. I ran downstairs
and hung these coats from the chandelier.

Check out the cuffs.

It's a "Rockland" and there is no other info (aside from the Union label).
I have a "Civil Defense Instructor" enamel pin on it. I have entire
items of clothing made from less wool than they used just to make
those massive lapels.

Gotta love the belt in the back. Can't tell if it once had two
buttons on the belt. Yes, even the belt has a lining. The brown
one came from Saver's thrift store in Redwood City.

The other one is much lighter weight, a gabardine. It is, however,
much darker in hue than the flash would lead you to believe. It
has an older fashioned box-y awkwardness to it that I love.

Check out the groovy liner:

Here's another attempt to get the liner, along with the tag, if you
are interested. I won't make it load automatically:

That one came from Thrift Town in San Francisco.

I wear a 48-50 jacket, so I'm pretty happy to have found
overcoats of such a vintage in my size. Enjoy.

i find thrift stores to have a wide variety of jackets that are both too small and too big for my 42-44 shoulders that arent too short in the arms. but alas i found this great 44 leather overcoat for 30 bucks at salvation army. i love it.

It is similar, isn't it? Yours is cut like a classic polo coat. Today, most polo coats are made with camel hair. But way back when, you could get one in any wool weave, pattern or color that you wanted.
