Just about every oil company had its trademarked name for attendant service -- before "Check and Double Check Service" was introduced in the early sixties, Texaco had "Circle Service," which meant the attendant circled your car cleaning and checking as the tank filled. During WWII, Shell had "Ground Crew Service, patterned after U. S. Army Air Corps Standards," which I suppose meant the attendant checked your flaps and rudder as well as your tires. And Atlantic's famous "Red Ball Service" was a promotion loathed by dealers, because it required that they give the customer their gas free if the attendant failed to do all the required checks. At first, this was a rain-or-shine requirement, but the dealers rebelled, forcing the company to add a "weather permitting" disclaimer to the rules of the promotion.

Fun video, but the term "double check" is used incorrectly throughout because it is not a double check (checking the same thing twice) but an additional check (as they are checking something related but not checked before).

Stuff like that drives me nuts. It's fine if it's a small one-off mistake (we all make mistakes - I certainly do all the time), but the "double check" was the core and sub-theme of the commercial. That it was, basically, wrong is off-putting.

And to boot, they're stealing a thirty-year-old catch phrase from Amos 'n' Andy. I suppose it's better than calling it "I'se Regusted Service."

Considering the power the franchisees had, I'm surprised a young Lizzie didn't complain to Texaco on her Grandfather's behalf and get the slogan confusion cleared up. Kidding aside, is it at all surprising that a national campaign went out with such a core glaring error?
