Ok, so I was just asked when winter-blend gasoline started. I'm guessing around 1926-'27, but that's almost pure speculation. Any help?

As to your question - I have no idea, but bet Lizzie does.

The illustration in this ad is incredible - talented artist (but he - I'll bet, in this case, it's a he - did push the boundary of good taste a bit with the aviatrix). [Edit Add: to quote Lizzie: "Oh, those Boys"]

Industry trade publications suggest the seasonal difference in blends was already well-established by 1920, so likely some time in the mid-1910s would be a reasonable guess. Interestingly, reports on gasoline volatility during the early twenties indicate that the actual difference between winter and summer-grade fuel was somewhat less than the advertising copy would lead one to believe. Oh those Boys.
