For those of you with children (or just an opinion) what do you think of bb guns for the young'uns?
I am an avid (do I have to add responsible? ;) ) firearm owner. I think nothing comes close to teaching children responsiblilty & maturity like plink'n around with a bb gun or .22 rifle. It is a lot of fun too!
Here is my son's Winchester pellet rifle.

What activities do we all keep the kids occupied with?

P.s. My son is also on the school basketball team, a Boy Scout (always working on those merit badges!) , artistic, plays music.

In the wintertime, the kids are involved in gymnastics and summertime it's all about water sports. We've got the two youngest riding on the tube while our oldest is starting to learn how to water ski this year.

Boy oh boy! If I were to list all of the things I shouldn't have done with a BB gun when I was a kid it could make up a book. :p
However, now I still have the old Daisy and it still shoots extremely accurately. The only thing that gets hit now are unsuspecting cans. :D ;)

BB guns are fine just as long as you watch what they are doing with them. Remember the days when they actually took rifles to school and stored them in their lockers because they were members of the schools rifle team? Practice was in the basement of the school. Nowadays they still carry guns to public schools but not because of any teams.

I see no problem with it. I had a bb gun when I was a kid. When I was 8 or 9 my dad started teaching me to shoot his .22s (rifle and pistol) and even his 357 Magnum.

I think kids that are taught gun safety and responsibility at an early age are less likely to misuse them in the future.

My dad had my sister and I go through gun safety training, we were ,thankfully, not the only girls there! This was in the early 90s. After that he taught us how to use a handgun as we had only used shotguns in the training. He wanted to make sure we knew how to use a gun in case an occasion should spring up on us, especially since my dad kept guns in the house. I have never had a chance to use a gun since but I feel confident that I can shoot straight and safe if I need to.

Now my husband had our little five year old out target shooting with him and I was upset, I just think he is too young to shoot a real gun, period. Maybe in a few years and he takes the same safety training I did, then I will feel comfortable. A BB guns sounds okay, as long as he is supervised.

I am also eager to hear other old time fun suggestions, anything to get the kids outside and moving would be great. One thing we used to do as kids was cops and robbers outside in the dark. We would get flashlights and the whole neighborhood would get in on the game, that was fun. :)

When I was about ten, the little brat up the block had a BB gun. I asked and asked and asked my folks for one. It was always "NO!" And, I did hear the bit about shooting my eye out.

I think that it's good for a kid to learn how to responsibly use fire arms.

around here there's a lot of anti-gun people, which is kind of weird considering the fact that it's the northwest [huh] bb guns were great, though I was probably one of the few girls that actually took an interest in them. Around where I lived, there were many places to go target practicing. I also remember it as being a great bonding experience with my father.

My brother had a BB gun, which he used to shoot out my bedroom window one day was he was especially mad at me. Of course, this is the kid who, when you asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, would say "Sniper," and once tried to kill a rat in the basement with a crossbow.

(He actually grew up to manage a health food store in Tennessee. But I'd step real carefully around the hummus display, just in case.)

I wonder if those paintball guns can do as much damage. Hmm.

BB gun...

I got one for Christmas many, many years ago...had great fun with it.

One of my playmates borrowed it and promptly shot another boy with it...of course my friend tried blaming it on my "defective" BB gun and his mother said I was a bad influence and we weren't allowed to be friends.

Later in life as teenagers, I went into the Military and my "friend" ended up in Jail...without my "bad influence".
