Oil Cleansing Method

I ran out of retin a last week and have to go to the dermatologist for a check up before he'll write a refil, so I finally got around to doing this with some evoo from the kitchen. I must say I regret waiting so long. My pores really are smaller and my face less oily. It weird and could just be in my head, but I also thing my acne scar are less noticable. I never would have thought that cleaning your face with oil would make it less oily. Strange world. I might buy some more oil next week and use them. I also thought to use it on my hair and it really does make it shinier, win win win, probably be good on the rest of my skin too, but evoo is more expensive then my nomal body lotions and I'm cheap. shrugs.

I have pretty good skin, I'm lucky, but my one problem is blackheads. I have a few that just won't budge on my nose and tiny ones around my lips (yucky, I know!). My skin is pretty normal but can border on dry.

Would the OCM be a good choice for me, or is it more geared toward people with oily skin? What could I use to get rid of all those darn blackheads?!

It would. Use the castor oil/ evoo mix, and massage, massage, massage it in. It might take a few times, but you'll eventually feel the plugs come out.

I even like to warm the oil mix a bit before I use it.

Ooh, this sounds so fantastic and gross at the same time. I can't wait to try it!

Good luck! BTW, the plugs are tiny, and feel like tiny rice grains, or semi soft grains of sand. Don't worry if you don't feel any, as long as when you look at your face the blackheads are beginning to disappear.

I got all disheartened with OCM when I never ever got the plugs out. I so want it to happen!

Yes, this has been my experience as well. I have not found OCM to remove blackheads. Easiest way for me to get rid of them is to pop them out. Of course, after a day or two, they're just there again.

I was also having a disappointing time - then I decided if the castor oil was the thing that was supposed to take them out, to try it straight. It worked pretty well!

I just put some on before I get in the shower, and massage it for a while, and let the warm water run on it to open pores, and then I wash it all off (I am a Dr. Bronner's Lavender castile soap girl too), and my nose has not looked this clean in years!

My facialist friend says that when you give your skin oil, it stops producing so much oil as it feels like it doesn't need to, so longterm use of the OCM might require adjustment down the line.

I haven't seen anybody mention this product, but it is by far the best I have ever used...it is called Dermadoctor Physical Chemistry and you can buy it at Sephone Online. It's a bit pricey, $75, but well worth it and a little bit goes a long way. I have oily/sensitive/acne prone skin and ever since I started using this scrub and castor oil, etc, it has improved my skin far beyond what prescription drugs have done. I use it once a week when I do my Sunday night facial. After taking a shower, I spritz evian water on my face, and about a dime size of the Physical Chemistry and work it over my face for a minute, rinse off with warm water, then I put my mask on (best I've ever used is from sephora as well Boscia Clarifying Detox Mask) and leave it on for like an hour, rinse that off with warm water, dry off, and then use the castor oil and jojoba mix to help get everything the mask brought to the surface. My face is always left with a clean rosy glow. I like to do this to beautify myself before going out on a date or something.

Hi Ladies!

I just about keeled over when I saw this thread, I thought I was the only crazy lunatic that kept a gallon of EVOO in my shower. I use it on everything and everywhere and after years of bathing with oils my skin has never been better and scars have disappeared and my skin is baby smooth.

I am going to get castor oil, because I have never thought to use it, and I am sure it is cheaper than the EVOO. (Although admitedly it is only $18 for a gallon.)

Glad to know that the oil cleansing method works for so many, I swear by it!

I have been using the OCM for a few months now...I use 50/50 castor oil and evoo, with a few drops of rosehip oil. After I massage it in, I place a hot washcloth over my face for a minute or so to open the pores and let the castor oil do it's thing, then wipe it off.

I went for a facial a few weeks after starting the OCM and the aestitician told me how tiny my pores looked. I haven't used store bought cleansers since.

Only use the Castor oil on the places you have plugged pores, and use it in conjunction with another oil; Castor can be very drying on its own. I use EVOO on my body too, I soak for a good long while in a hot tub, then use the 'exfoliating' gloves on my body.

I've started the OCM just tonight. So far I like it; it doesn't leave a greasy feeling and it gets makeup off better than anything I've used before. Now I've heard of a period of adjustement, a detox period....how long should that take? I mean, how long should I stick to this before I begin to see results? I don't want to give up too soon. I'm mostly hoping to get less acne, I'm using 3 parts CO, 10 parts EVOO, 2 parts jojoba and 2 parts almond oil.

How long it takes to see results is really specific to each person. I have heard from people that the first time the tried it, they saw sebum plugs drawn out of their pores. I have never personally seen anything that dramatic. I did break out slightly when I first started using it but it quickly cleared up and I have not had any significant breakouts since.

How often do you clean your face with the OCM? Before bed and first thing in the morning or is just once a day sufficient? If you only use OCM once a day, do you wash your face at any other time and how/with what?

I should do it once a day, but I'm lucky if I remember once a week. :( In a perfect world, I would wash my face with warm water in the morning, and in the evening wash with OCM and slather on my shea butter/coconut oil mix moisturizer and then go to bed, letting my face soak up the moisturizer at night.

I use straight jojoba oil. I had never head of mixing them until I came here. Are there better oils to mix and ones that do not mix well? Ever since I tried something other than the jojoba I've been scared.
I tried Grapeseed oil for it's antiseptic properties and my face did not react well at all. It took over two months for my face to clear up. It so so bad I wouldn't leave the house. I broke out in horrible cyctic acne. Then I tried it on my body and developed cycts on my belly and hips.

Apart from reading the DHC oil products catalogue, I had never really considered OCM. I have always had oily skin with the occasional breakout. Always shiny. Lots of yucky blackheads. At 40+, I kind of thought this problem would magically disappear but noooo...

So anyway, feeling adventurous, I tried just plain EVOO to clean my face, followed by a very mild lathering of cleanser to remove some of the oily feeling. My face felt soft (not squeeky) afterwards. I kind of forgot I was doing it, twice a day, and just happened to catch a glance of myself in the mirror today: the constant shine/oiliness I usually have was practically nonexistant. I usually have to blot/re-powder many times throughout the day. Now, nothing. Also, the blackhead situation is about 75% gone. I don't know why or how this works, but it did. I'm going to get a few more oils and experiment next time I'm at the health food store.

Thanks so much for all the great info in this thread!

This thread is so interesting! I have very very sensitive skin, and have recently found a combo that works for me - a lavera (like gluegungeisha mentioned) sensitive foaming cleanser and a moisturiser by a company called Jason that is made of 80% Aloe vera extract, both from Whole Foods. These are the only cleansing/moisturising products I have ever used that seem to agree with my skin, and I have just run out of both, so I think I'll try OCM and see if it works for me.

I'd love to try the castor to remove blackheads, but am scared as my skin is dry anyway.
