Observation In A Bar

Since this is the Observation Bar, I thought I'd ask this.

Do you remember that strange man that walked into the bar one night? Wearing a roll of stamps, a bag lapeled "Hardware Supplies", a tired look on his face, and somehow, while you were sitting at the bar, speaking with your friend, you couldn't help but observe that man. Something about them just seemed interesting. You didn't want to say anything, though.

Or how about that woman who stumbled in, an angry look on her face. She lugs herself over to the stool, sits down, and gives the bartender a fake smile, as if nothing is wrong. What was wrong? You don't ask, but still, she seems interesting enough to occasionally glance back at her, hoping she doesn't notice.

Now I am not talking about easedropping. I am strickling talking about observing the people, the atmosphere, even outside the door. Passing by in a car, anything.

What have you observed inside of a bar or outside?

My friend and I decided to go out to a piano bar the other night in the "Gay-borhood" of Philadelphia (please don't think I'm being rude- it's actually marked that way on maps given out at Pride Marches and on gay websites/ newspapers/ magazines). It was a gorgeous dark swanky bar with a grand piano in one corner.

The bar was empty and the woman on the piano was tiny, but she just belted out old Motown and show tunes like she was singing to a packed auditorium. Her voice was so hoarse it reminded me of Tom Waites and made me almost want a whisky and a cigarette. My friend and I grabbed a seat on the edge of the piano and sang right along with her until almost 1 in the morning. I don't think I've ever had so much fun at a bar! :)

I'm a people watcher, generally anyway. I probably notice more then I should.

The one that sticks out the most was when I was married to my first husband, I used to have to go to the bar to watch the big boxing matches. A woman in her middle aged years, comes in, goes to the bar, takes a seat and is near dripping with defeat. After her 5th whiskey, I turned (I was drinking coffee) and asked her if she was ok, and if she need a ride home that night.

She said no, she was good, and I watched her and the more she drank, the more misery wrapped around her like a cloak.

A few days later she was arrested for shooting her husband. I still remember the abject despair that was platable around this woman, many many years later. Probably one of the reasons I left my ex-husband, I didn't want to end up like her.

The only thing that stands out in my mind happened in 1998. I was at a *ahem* gentleman's club and an angry girlfriend came in, caught her man there, proceeded to call the entertainers insulting names, and then came the best part....

...she took his martini and slammed it against the bar, glass going everywhere! Other than that, I don't think I've ever noticed or paid much attention to anyone else in a bar.
