O/T? Soul Music

Soul music has always been a bit 'late mid century' for my tastes (hence the O/T moniker).

I heard some tracks by Irma Thomas and Solomon Bourke recently that made me pause and rethink. My tastes are wide and varied (mid century and earlier only), it occurred to me I might be missing something good by ignoring this genre.

I know that a lot of musical styles fall under 'Soul'. Can anyone here give me some pointers on artists worth hearing? No repo stuff please.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Great Music to be Had !

How about Wilson Pickett ? Sam & Dave ? The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown ? Aretha Franklin ? Otis Redding ? And I'm not even mentioning the superb people who recorded for Motown. ( I have a bias in favor of the Memphis sound, the Stax Records label in particular, with their in-house backing group, Booker T. and the MG's, going back to my youth.)

Try HI records artists such as Otis Clay and OV Wright, the label was in Memphis at the same time as the much better known STAX, but was a bit grittier.
