Yes, thanks, it was hard coming back & finding scaffolding around the building. Waking up to some serious rumbling vibrations. I'm told parts of the facade on 65th street had been destroyed & some windows widened. I havent had the heart to look. I believe the Owner will now be responsible to restore it.

I'm very impressed that it was a unanimous vote. I'm not sure how the rest of the process goes, but at least its going in the right direction.

AND, as true NewYorkers, most of the neighbors dont really socialize. Now everyone is bonded together!

because APPARENTLY everything that is OLD is BAD.

and money rules the world anyways. If you can set up a casino in your own home, making hundreds of dollars a night, why keep that home there, when you own the property and can just tear the thing apart and build a fancy looking casino, then someone who is even greedier than you are comes around and buys it from you for a zillion dollars! At least you have the money, but not your childhood and dignity. But eh, you can just buy that! (or not)

I don't quite agree that this is the mindset of everyone. This board is proof of that. And I don't quite agree with Jay, either. When I was in London I saw them facing some of the same problems as New Yorkers: old buildings being bought and gutted to make some monstrous modernized stores. My favorite shudder worthy moment was a Starbucks right beside the Canterbury Cathedral.

However, lots of people are trying to preserve their history and their city's. New York has some great historical buildings and places still up and running, as was just demonstrated. I'm very glad the blocks were saved, MrBern; it sounds like a lovely place to live.

Future architect, old styles

I'm studying to be an architect actually. I haven't checked the news threads in a while and when I read this it was so sad...then happy. But I do agree with what everyone has been saying. I don't like where architecture is going. The post-modern look has already ruined the London skyline. I do design my houses and my high-rise buildings with a more vintage feeling. Although I must say, now you know how everyone in Chicago felt when Macy's took over Marshall Field's. Heck, I wouldn't be suprised if the demoliton comtractors were from Chicago.

This is a good thing?
No but that is how things are. Some people are in too much of a rush to get to know their neighbors. The tenant turnover is sometimes so high it is almost impossible (or not worth) getting to know anyone. Life in the big city...
