Put a ribbon on my M1899-1902 Campaign Hat conversion, (obviously the ribbon and bow work is my own modification. I gave the bow a slight upswoop)....

A couple more Spanish American War era campaign hat projects in the rough...both have been blocked and sized up, brims have been trimmed, and ready to be put together. The orange hat is a Longhorn Western with a 5 3/4 open crown and with a 2 5/8 brim. The tan hat is a Resistol Western with a 5 3/4 open crown and a 3' brim.

Another of my ongoing M1899-1904 Campaign Hat conversion projects. This one is tan with a matching 1/2 inch ribbon and double pointed campaign style bow. I still have more I want to do with it....

The hat is a tan Resistol Stagecoach. It has a 5 3/4 open crown with a 3 inch brim. The crown and the brim are shaped after some old pictures I saw from the Spanish American War era...

Trying to locate Spanish American War era insignias like this. I found some on eBay

I went for this sideview profile but without the "clamshell" taper of his hat when viewed from the front. This is an actual Marine Gunnery Sergeant dressed in a replica Spanish American War era uniform

I also went with a "cowboy" style curl on the brim similar to the one in this photo from the Spanish American War

Just ordered a Spanish American War campaign hat from Dirty Bill's and can't wait for it to arrive in a few weeks. Unlike my Stetson, which has a chinstrap to hold down the acorns and hat cords, how does one keep hat cords on a campaign hat without a chinstrap?

The brim has been cut down from 3.5" all around to 3.0" sides and 2-3/4" sides. Brass vents were subdued with gun blue and rubbed off then the ribbon hat band and bow added. The bow was time consuming figuring it out at first but I enjoyed learning how to do it. During the process of sewing it on the existing leather sweat band came apart but I have a used brown leather sweat band and hope to get it sewn in. I guess the hat band and bow will have to be removed first.
It's been a fun process and look forward to getting the brim stitched Monday.

(P.S. The bow tails will be trimmed more cleanly, my scissors aren't sharp enough)
Is there a tutorial on how to create a bow like this? Is the bow separate from the hat band? I’m putting together my first hat project, a campaign/slouch hat similar to this one and need some help with this item. Thanks! Todd

Campaign Hat from the Army Store Tucson. The felt actually has a better hand than most of my modern hats. The Army Store was open from the early 1920s until the mid 1950s . No tags, no makers name on sweat. Sweatband is very soft and supple name on sweat. Sweatband is very soft and supple

I love the Montana crease, I’m considering a Montana crease for my first custom hat if the hatter is capable of it. A Montana crease with a bound pencil roll brim…hm..

Update to my previous concern about hat cords, I've been looking at tons of reference images of the late 1890s and it turns out, most campaign hats were worn without. So I think I'll be doing the same, at least until I feel like changing up my style a bit.
