Hi Dean,

it's been a long time... Hope you are doing well.

That is a cool version of the M1883 hat you have made there.

Better than ever, Rene! Been hanging out with the VLJ crowd more than here, but find myself drawn to re-connect here, hopefully keeping a balanced presence in both forums. BTW, I have a second set of hat vents, so if I can score another good hat for modding, I'll do one for you to add to your collection for reinacting. The M1883 would provide you with a unique hat, even better than that Dirty Billy's you've got.

Deanglen--I think there are at least two M1889s in a glass case in the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, right outside of Rough Rider Bar. I know there is one copy, too.

Hi Dean

Your hats, and the Rough Rider movie I bought inspired the hats I bought from Mike Moore and Tony Brouner.

Welcome Back!!

Thanks for the warm welcome, all of you! Mike, your hats are beautiful! Doug, I'd love to see those hats someday! I intend to revitalize this thread! The campaign hat, especially pre-1911, is special for many reasons, the history, the uniquely American aspect of it, the look that is not country music star cowboy, but rugged, classic, vintage, a look all its own, functional and disciplined like the men who wore them for all those years. They're good for formal, or casual. Not a fedora, but the fedora's cousin who served in the military and is proud of it!

BTW I tinted the ribbon darker per further research, some had darker ribbons, and I think it gives the hat a center of visual gravity:

Glad to hear Dean. I am also on the VLJ but very rarely in there...

I would be very interested in an M1883, if you should come across a suitable hat for modding.

The Dirty Billy's is my favourite hat. No Nashville or Hollywood Cowboy over it at all. Just pure vintage ruggedness.

I've got four possibles I'm watching on ebay right now, all fur felt, and would make great conversions. I'll keep you posted. Will need your shipping address if you have the time to message it to me.

Great job Dean!!!
I kinda liked the other ribbon, I think it gave the hat a somewhat 'used' or worn look.
But either way....it looks fantastic!

I agree!! I just overtinted it! Might give it a light coat. I go back on forth on ribbon color, there was so much variation in them. Really like your non-Shorpy thread, BTW.
