I'm often described as "skinny" and only 5'7" but I've worn 'tall' or 'large' sized stockings and pantyhose since puberty! lol I'm of the opinion that hosiery sizing has always run small. I find fully-fashioned sizing to be a little better though, for once the sizing chart is accurate! lol

I don't like the modern size charts with their A B and C sizes... It makes me feel as if I'm being graded lol

Really? That's not very nice! lol Over here you're just petite, medium or tall. Nyawww. You can be extra-tall too, which I find comfiest for pantihose. Saves the crotch from running away one me. One of the many reasons why I prefer stockings! :D

I have wondered why they call the ones for the bigger legged gals "opera size" does that mean its over when the fat lady sings? I prefer to get the biggest stockings and pantyhose i can find, that way, the crotch isn't by my knees making me walk like a penguin.

Cervin Seamed Stockings

I just got a a pair of Cervin stockings and they fit really well. They are a bit "short" versus other modern stockings, but totally the correct vintage length. ie: their tops sit mid-way upper thigh. And they are the the sweetest blush pink color (good for a pale gal like me). So, for future reference, does anyone know what a Cervin size 2 translates size-wise to other brands, modern or vintage?

Reversable Seams?

I wound up with three pair of stockings in the original box. Holeproof brand, yellow box, I'm thinking 50's. The side of the box is marked with the usual size/color info and the phrase, "Reversible Seams"

I've never heard of such a thing. Anyone know?

I received the lot of stockings I purchased, and in an original box was a pair that were *clearly* silk. I looked under the paper wrapping and saw a receipt. It was dated Feb. 1943 with the description of the stockings written in pencil.

I dont know whether to believe this is real or not. With how hard would it have been to get silk stockings in 1943 and then to have them survive till 2010! Really!? Im kinda freaking out.

What do you gals think?

It's real! They never wore them, you can tell as the colored ink is all still present! SCORE!
Not to mention that it is emerald green ink, so you are hurting me as a green collector. I'll bet DeadPanDiva feels the same...

Opera length is like opera length gloves, which come up to the upper arm. So opera length stockings come up to the upper thigh on a normal leg, and since they get shorter as they go over a larger leg, larger legs generally fit better in Operas.

My guess would be that they were pre-war stock kept "under the counter" for special customers. Perhaps customers who paid with gas and meat ration coupons along with cash, if you know what I mean....

And then the purchaser put them aside for a special occasion that never came.

Oh, just imagine what the story behind these stockings could be.
