A great post. It has reminded me of a heavy Breton sweater I had in the 1980s. Trying to find an equivalent now I just get high street “fashion” look-alike brands, nothing like the genuine garment. Does anyone know of a source for the latter, preferably in UK?

Nice to see these crop up. They remind me a bit of Fairisle, but from a different geographical tradition. I could see me picking up a couple at some point. I'm also very fond of traditional Aran knitwear, though those lack the same colourful approach to patterning.

Nice example - though on the pricey side, imo... unless it's hand-knit, of course (the labour in that always whacks up the price). Of all places, the Carrolls' Irish Gifts chain does some cracking Aran knitwear. Doubtless machine-knit, but it looks good, it's pure wool, and having handled them they are very much comparable in weight and quality to the cottage-industry pieces I was raised on (the difference being, of course, they were all hand-knit, but...). Decent prices - https://www.carrollsirishgifts.com/aran-knitwear/men/?start=0&sz=12 - I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy a couple ahead of the end of December to avoid the import taxes.

Thank you for the link. I used to wear Arans a lot but have neglected them over the past few years. I always preferred and still prefer hand knitted - which I think the Peter Christian one is. I like the model as well (in the Peter Christian - mature years, but nice strapping chap!

Yes, I checked on google and they still seem to be there, the website is rather crowded, but you can find the sweaters way down if you look in the men's area.

Hand knit would make the difference in price for sure. The PC stuff all looks great. Tempted to try one of their suits.

What type of fisherman’s sweaters do you favour?

I recently acquired a new Norwegian sweater - Navy and Ecru - from Peter Christian (the firm I mentioned earlier in the context of the Guernsey Breton wool sweater) and have worn it quite a few times over the past few weeks. The fit is perfect and I love the feel and smell of the wool. It’s warm but breathes very well. They do an Ecru and Navy version as well - I might get it although I already have an old one in that colour.
When I was a teenager one of my Rugby coaches often wore a Norwegian sweater during practices in cold weather. That was the thing that initially switched me on to their advantages both practical and aesthetic. I was copying him when I bought my first one at that age.
I’ll try and add a photo soon of the new Navy and Ecru as well as links to the supplier.
