Norton Internet Security 2006 SUCKS

I had Norton 2003, and it was due for renewal. I went to the site, and was upgraded to the 2006 version for $69. Ok , it has worked well before, right?

WRONG> I had to install the damn thing three times! Error messages, then unistall, go back and delete the previous version (the install doesn't do this), and now the damn thing has shut off my internet. I re-adjusted the security levels to "low" and it now works. But it then screwed up the settings on the system, and I had to re-boot, re-check, and visit "My Network Settinsg" about 20 times! Anyone else had this problem? I am about ready to request a refund and flush this "T**D". What about just using Windows XP Firewall instead?

Here are some others that share in your misery:

I used Norton System Suite once years ago and that was it for me. I ended up cleaning my PC and registry out.

I confess that I do use Norton Ghost, but that was designed by another company and purchased by Norton. That program is a life-saver.

I now use AVG for free. I tried AVAST but it had a complicated user interface for me. Using a hardware firewall as well.

I used to use Norton. But, my computer was upgraded to Windows XP. Now I use AVG (Free edition) and Zone Alarm again FREE.
No problems over the last year!
Steve :)

Strongly agree!!! I gave up on the expensive stuff after talking to computer geeks and the free stuff such as AVG and Zone Alarm are THE best out there. ;)

I've been fixing computers for nearly 25 years now (I started when I was 17) and aside from the AV, Symantec has never got ANYTHING right. All that system works stuff just screws up your pc. As the others have noted, the freeware works a thousand times better. On my office computers I use AVG, Spybot, Adaware, Toolbarcop, and CWshredder. (I have a hardware firewall so I don't need Zone Alarm) Remove everything else, install those five (or six) , and stay away from music and game sites.

Senator Jack

Ditto!to what theses guy's said! AVG free edition and Zone alarm are excellent choices. For added resources and protection check out Steve Gibsons web site https://grc.com he has several small utilities that help disable all the back doors Microsoft builds into their OS's! Check out the "shields Up" utility!

I was working on my sisters laptop, running norton antivirus with the latest definitions. Something was definitely in there and norton scanned and found nothing. Put AVG Free on that machine and it pulled off 16 virus files.

Sincerely,
Rob

andykev- Hmmm? I got an upgrade offer notice but for only $39! I too have 2003 and have simply updated yearly my virus subscription for like $15 which I'll probably do again. The 2003 works fine and I don't need any new and improved features.

That's the paradox of PCs too. I started in 1988 with DOS 1.0 and can say XP has been bullet proof and has never crashed on me. Others with similar hardware have regular problems. Someone talks about myriad problems with Symantec and I've had none. These are the things that are puzzling to the extreme. There is no uniformity of performance really. PCs are so very much in their infancy, truely.

I have it licked.

Update, in fairness to Symantec. Ok, I loaded and unloaded the program no less than five times! I went onto the web site and downloaded "fixes" and work arounds, info sheets, and instruction steps. The help section is ablsoutely the most through you would ever dream it to be. Because it has to be.

The program is now installed and working perfectly. So I am keeping it and am happy. When this subscription runs out, I will go with the above recommended software.

I have also upgraded my laptop from Windows ME:rage: :rage: to Windows XP Professional:) :)

It caused problems with my cardbus adaptor to use the wireless. After numerous "blue screens" with error text, notify Microsoft Y/N ?, and fatal crashes....I determined the problem was the intatllation disk software drivers weith my cardbus D-Link DWL-G630. I found the Microsoft and the D-Link updated software, and installed it. Problems went away!
Oh, and the cardbus adaptor now has a steady green light and a blinking one when it is sending or receiving. Before, it only flashed two lights steady. Not good.

I treated myself with a new Logitec V220 cordless laptop mouse. Wow. It is the nicest mouse I have ever used. with scrolling, clicking, and zooming. A far better ergonomic feature than the touch pad on the laptop. My carpel tunnel syndrom thanks you.;)

Whatever you do, DON'T trust the XP firewall farther than you can throw a desktop. I use ZoneAlarm and it works well, and if you go to download.com you can find a plethora of free, highly-rated spyware programs that will do the trick.

PSG,

Before you give any more money to thieves, please read my above reply. AVG is free for personal use and it has yet to crash a system I have put it on. I did just install Pc-cillin for a company last week (the guy in charge of tech bought it) and while the installs went through without a hitch, I have yet to see if is actually any good.

I don't find forking over some cash- it's for my biz. Thanks for letting me know it installed without a hitch. I just noticed on their site I can download a trial version so I'll try that. And yes, I do notice that they don't play well together at all when I went from Norton to McAfee, so I'll be sure to kick McAfee to the curb before I install. :)

I ran Norton for several years. It stopped NOTHING! It would tell me I had a virus (after I already got it) but then wouldn't delete it, only quarantine it. I now run McAfee Security Suite. Works extremely well, allows me to accept or reject cookies or web bugs, tells me emails contain viruses before they are opened, stops spam, etc, etc. It has never compromised my machine. I'm sold. I ran AVG on my son's, but he still got tons of spyware, etc. Worked OK but it wasn't what I needed. I still run Lavasoft Ad-Aware but it usually doesn't find
too much any more. Don't buy Norton.

Mine runs out in a couple of weeks. With all your advice, I downloaded AVG Free yesterday. When I started creating the Rescue Disks, I quit after using 4 floppies. Is there another option? How many floppies can I expect to fill?

Thanks for the advice,

David

NIS 2004 (Norton Internet Security) it is wonderful, upgraded from 2003, NIS has blocked every virus, it is slow tho to scan stuff, it is bloated with "pretty" graphics, but it gets the Job done! surfing the internet without norton **shudders**
