Being that some in my family circle are in the education business I can say for certain that teachers all approve of recess as a way for the kids to bleed off some of that boundless energy they manufacture. If they're inside all day that bottled up energy explodes in the classroom.:eusa_doh:

Great. Let's ban tag, because kids might get hurt and parents can sue. What a brilliant notion. Let's remove everything else about growing up, while we're at it.

Good grief. Kids can't play at school because they might get hurt and their parents might sue. They also can't be disciplined at school, because the parents might sue. They also can't be given grades that might be construed as less than their classmates' - after all, that "promotes low self-esteem," and the parents might sue.

Meanwhile, they're just playing video games at home - because so many of them live in poorly-designed modern suburbs with their all-car-all-the-time focus and walls and one way in & out, they can't walk anywhere in the neighborhood to have fun - because there is no neighborhood any more, only subdivisions and strip malls and big-box stores and office parks. Keep everything segregated. No ball field three blocks down, no park around the corner in the town square where they can run around and be kids then walk across the street to the drug store for Cokes and ice cream - which we won't allow anyway, because both of those things are fattening (hey, let's ban them, too! C'mon, everybody sue them!). No, let's just pile them all into the Suburban and drive them to the official play zone away from everything for carefully supervised "fun" where the kids aren't allowed to do anything too strenuous (can't let them get hurt) and the moms get into screaming matches if everybody isn't picked equally for everything.

In fact, lets just forbid the kids from ever going outside at all - after all, the sun can cause sunburn and skin cancer! The wind might blow a leaf into their face! It might rain and make them catch cold! No need to ever let them leave the house - the world is too dangerous!

(SLAP!) Sorry, went on a little rant there.

Hmmm.... gotta question the Gangs-wearing-Fedoras thing.

Many adult establishments have 'banned' wearing hats (as discussed in other threads) because gangs have adopted baseball caps as part of their colors.

But Fedoras? Methinks the school administration is kneejerking.

I vaugely remember that thread. My take was that the gangs were wearing baseball caps, but that the rule was worded "hats" so the staff assumed it was intended to cover all hats. (The way people dress now, the ones who wrote the rule probably don't think there are any other kind of hats.)

:eek:fftopic: The staff is probably not allowed any discretion or intelligent thought about the rules, either. Like in the schools where the kid with really bad asthma isn't allowed to carry his inhaler because it's a medication  , in spite of the fact that if he had a bad attack he could die before getting to the school nurse, or before the nurse could get there from the other school she's at because there aren't enough school nurses for the district. :eusa_doh:

Sorry, I pushed one of my own buttons there.

Not "can" sue. Not "might" sue. Do sue.

What would you suggest that the school districts do? Somehow find a way to absorb the cost of litigation?

.

Marc, I'm just wishing people would stop acting like, quite frankly, sue-happy idiots who can't deal with the real world. I know that's not really a solution for the schools at the moment. I'm just peeved, is all.

I thought getting hurt was a part of being a kid.

Totally!
I cut my head open after falling on a broken glass bottle (blood everywhere) while playing kickball. They just rushed me to the office and after I sat up right it stopped. Told my Mom, end of story. I had cornrows in and jokeingly the lady said if I had move an inch to the right, the class would have hit my hair instead

Oh
And I still made my base too YEAH kickball!

who are these people that make these rules? who are these people that sue schools over stuff like this? there has not been one post on this thread that thinks its a good idea. any other post about any other topic has some sort of exchange of differring opinions, but not this one. everybody I have ever talked to says the same thing. so who is doing this? Maybe I just associate with people who think like me.
