For a couple days I've been trying to find a bit of info on a couple Schott models. Links to their forum were dead - I imagined they were doing a website revamp or something, and it would come back up soon. Today I used their chat feature on their website. They told me they removed the forum due to uncontrollable spam. Crushing news.
On that forum I found detailed discussions on models, history, sizing, everything I wanted. Gail was all over the thing. We know she's gone now but she had quite a legacy there.
I find this to be a crippling state of events. I'm gonna go cry now.

I had no idea. Can you let the person know it would be great if they even locked it to new posts but left the archive up?

I'll voice the same when I visit Schott later this month.
Genius. Every one of us should suggest the same.

That's BS.

They could have locked the forum and left it readonly. They could have a competent admin implement anti spam measures.

They just didn't want to.

Not necessarily. The Schott forum was a holdover from when companies often made their own in-house forum software. I expect whoever coded it is long gone.

I like Aloysius' suggestion earlier. Everyone who cares about what's right could suggest this to them. Allow us access to forum archives. It's a nearly endless treasure of Schott information.

I did this earlier today. Visited their site, used their chat feature and made the suggestion.
I search "Schott 115 125" and the only good links go to the Schott forum, and all those links from Google are dead.

It had indeed turned into a nightmare cesspool of spam.

Once Gail passed no one at Schott wanted to deal with it.

Too bad.

The forum contained incredible wealth of information. Just the other day, I needed info on yet another Perfecto I never saw before and Gail once again came to the rescue.

"Good morning Denise. I'm still running Google searches for bits of Schott info that I know used to be here on the forum. Google links to here - the links are dead because we still don't have access to forum archives. You guys have no idea how valuable those archives were to us, you have no idea the disservice you're doing to your brand by disallowing access to forum archives. Just letting you know.

I understand but we were getting too much spam and we could not control it. Are you trying to find out about something imparticular?

CGZ 11:38 AM
You said that the first time we talked about this. What you should be doing is still allow full access to forum ARCHIVES. Allow no new postings - say "sorry, forum is locked from new postings".

because all the answers are there.

Not necessarily. The Schott forum was a holdover from when companies often made their own in-house forum software. I expect whoever coded it is long gone.

I've experienced this with at least one other forum. Long term presence, got overrun with junk, and the one person running it just decided enough.

It was a custom app he had written before prepacked forum software was a thing and the data was just not able to be exported.

Unfortunate as it was, like Schott, a wealth of information.

^ Yeah it happens unfortunately. A real shame. Much knowledge lost to the ether. A good reminder to everything that if you come across info you value, SAVE IT!!! I have several hard drives full of crap which is useless... until you can't find it online anymore.

Luckily I did compile and save several posts from the forum like :
Schott Vests
In 1992 & 1993 we produced the style #109V in the naked cowhide leather. looks like a #118 Jacket without sleeves. This vest would have the Yellow Perfecto label in it and retailed around $200.00. I have XXL in VG condition

The 410V was a pebbled cowhide leather vest, which we produced from 2002 - 2004. This vest based on the bar code was made in 2003. It was a popular vest at that time. I have a size 50 #410v also

Vest style #419V in 1984 & 1985 was made in a grain printed cowhide and would have had a Durojac or a Schott label. The vest at that time probably retailed for arround $100.00.

The classic M/C vest has been offered in our line off and on through the years in different types of leather. In 1995 we offered the style #109 in Naked cowhide and most recently in 2013 style 626V in the mid-weight cowhide.

The 626V is the same styling as the 109V, but there are differences in materials. The 109V was in the naked cowhide leather and had a quilt lining. The 626V is in a mid-weight cowhide which is lighter in weight then the naked cowhide and does have a slight finished applied to the leather. The lining on the 626V is a satin iridescent lining, not a quilted lining. Gail Schott Forum RIP

AI will be the end of everything nice, nowadays you see livechat on streams filled with advertisement bots basically killing the chat for everyone since bot generated posts flow continuously.

Schott Forum Reposts :
Schott model #518 offered in 1982 in a soft steerhide leather, we then did not offer the 518 again until 1986 to 1991 in a Top Grain cowhide 518 has piped pocket welts on the pockets

#517 produced only in 1983 in a soft Steerhide leather #517 has no piped pocket welts on the pockets

#418 1983-1985, then in the years 1992 & 1995 in the Finished Split Cowhide leather

Both styles were offered in long sizes too making those actual style numbers 418L & 517L.

Schott Logo coin pocket label was only used in either 1983 or 1984, these are the only 2 years we used these pocket labels on our jackets

Our Naked Cowhide and Steerhide are Grade "A" hides at a much higher cost, the Finished Split and Top Grain Cowhide leather are corrected hides that are hides with imperfections such as a lot of scarring and tick marks, these hides are finished in a way to cover the marks. They are the same thickness and have the same durability as a Grade "A" hide but are now at a lower cost.

Kind of amazing when you think about it. It's a position one might consider kind of mundane, not highly skilled or anything, not requiring a certification or degree. But then Gail. There's a person who fit so perfectly in the position she held that one couldn't even imagine someone better. A perfect match. And the tremendous value she brought to the party for all involved. That's really something remarkable.
