Bleh.

One of the things I enjoy the most about some of the German/Euro (modern) board games I play, is that they have nice "bits". This includes nice, if plastic, representations of ancient coins, or even just thick cardboard coins with nice graphics, and paper bills.

I can see in once sense that yes, it's the modern way to deal with money - goodness knows I love debit cards in many cases. But in another sense, it does seem like a way to indoctrinate the kids. I also like that you win based on life points, not money -could be good (teaches you that money isn't everything), could be very bad (teaches you to spend spend spend whatever, as it's just plastic!).

Man that just burns me up, blatant product placement that secures the company in the mind of the child. We already have a major problem with credit card debt in the western world and these nutbags are just trying to make it worse, these kind of evil corporations make me sick.

I'm not sure I've ever even played Life -- is it a kid's game? How does it compare to Monopoly (which to me is young adult/family fare)?

If it's geared towards kids, then this does seem sleezy. If it's more of a "family" game, not so bad.

How many kids even play board games anymore?

We play board games in our house ALL the time! Board games and card games. I think that with all of today's technological advances, many parents are letting their children bypass the great family pastime of board games, in lieu of video games..... what a shame! Nothing says family fun like
"Col. Mustard, in the Library, with a Rope" or "Go straight to Jail. DO NOT collect $200" or "You sunk my battleship!".

I'm partial to spelling games, so my favorites are Yatzee Word, Boggle and Scrabble. I also LOVE Cribbage & Mankala!

I have 4 boys (25, 13,12, & 5) and their favorites are Yu-Gi-Oh (or however you spell that), which is a modern day version of the old card game WAR, Monopoly, Sorry, and this neat new game where you set up a board and use these little things with mirrors on the front to ricochet a 'lazer' beam, trying to get the angles just right, in order to hit your opponent's main guy. It's really fun and oh so good for the brain! You don't know if you've figured out all your angles properly, until the end of your turn, when you turn on the 'lazer' and follow the beam! They also all like chess, checkers and puzzles.

-Given the choice though, they'd take video games probably 90% of the time... but that's the key -GIVEN THE CHOICE- I don't give them the choice. They get video games only on weekends and only for a small amount of time. So if they want to play and can't have videos...... TA DAH...Board Games, Card Games... and OUTDOOR games! -Who doesn't remember "Red Rover, red Rover, we call Martina over!" or "Green light, yellow light, red light, STOP!"? Ahhh, now there's a fun time!!!

I guess their thinking goes something like this:

The majority of people are going to be saddled by debt anyways later in their lives; might as well get them used to it early . . .

Unaffordable credit makes the world go around, to butcher a horrid old saying.

The better thing to do would be to get them straight into financial matters so they understand finance and not take advantage of them from day one. Monopoly doesn't have credit cards. Broke is broke. No bail out borrowing---unless you have a thieving little brother who wants to play loan shark int he game. :p ;)
