No love from MTV

Anyone remember the Replacements video back in the 80's? Their record company insisted they do one, so they filmed a stereo playing their album. I've never watched MTV, and I've never bought a copy of Rolling Stone. Too much monkey business.

MTV I can't get worked up about one way or the other. Rolling Stone... frankly, it aggrieves me that it's taken seriously as music journalism. I've never seen a single word worth reading in it.

Actually, given their prominence at the various "Tea Party" rallies over the past few years, I've seen more tricorns lately than MTV shirts.

It does seem weird to think how little music is shown on MTV, not to mention how little cooking is on Food Network and how little history is left on History Channel.

They should probably rename them all "Ad Network #1/2/3 etc."

Tropicalbob - "Bastards of Young," I think was the video. Just a speaker playing the song. Classic. I remember MTV when they only had about 8 songs, and ran "Fish Heads" several times a day. Still 1,000 times better than what they run now. Even most kids I know are too cool for MTV now.

I've always thought that a certain demographic's aversion to fedoras has to do with a lack of exposure to true style, worn with confidence and poise. Backlash against hats and those who wear them is typically exhibited by those who've never seen a good one worn well.

I wonder if what we're witnessing is that youthful impulse to be cooler than cool. Or hipper than hip. Facial hair was decidedly unhip among the younger set some years back (or so a local alternative weekly assured me), then it was goatees everywhere, and now it's full beards of some length (or was that last month?).

When I was in my 20s I liked to poke fun at "hippies," but my tongue was planted firmly in cheek, seeing how people a generation or two ahead of me likely thought I was one. In my case, it's motivated mostly by my hope not to take seriously unserious things. I tease guys about what I call their full-on Indiana Jones drag. Some of the earliest members here were waaaay into that stuff. But hell, I've been known to wear a nice slightly longer than waist-length brown leather jacket and a tall, full-crowned brown fedora myself.

Yeah, I'm also a little confused by this article.
Is it;

a) The start of a hipster backlash that signals the end of would be hipsters over-inflating the bidding on vintage eBay items (clearly, a good thing).

Or...

b) Hipsters trying desperately differentiate themselves from people like us, so that they can prove that they only wear hats in an 'ironic' way, because that would be 'cool' (clearly, this is so much self-important BS).

Does anyone over 15, age or IQ, actually watch MTV anymore?

I think when I last saw anything on it (though I've never lived in a household where we had the subscription television packages on which it is broadcast here), they were still showing music videos.

Last time I watched it with any regularity, Money For Nothing was still in heavy rotation.

I wonder what they would say about wearing western hats.... wait. I did not care about MTV even when they were relevant and I still don't care. ;)
