hello fellow night owls. Making an early start... Haha. I'm knackered but i'm in one of those very weird moods where there is something you can't quite place keeping you from feeling content enough to fall asleep. I just feel like i CAN'T go to sleep yet and i SHOULDN'T.

Anyone else get the feeling? Xx

Is your kitchen sink shiny? How about the bathroom sink... Toilet bowl sparkling? Bed linen changed?

A bit of mundane housework is as good a way as any to spend some awake time, and you'll be glad in the morning. Go set a timer for 15 minutes and do some housework until the buzzer goes off :)

If you're online at your place of work, get your work area clean and shiny and set everything out for next time you're there.

Wiping out a sink isn't noisy! I bet your mom would love to wake up to clean sinks :) It would be a wonderful surprise for her to find a secret housework elf working overnight.

Have you backed up your computer lately? Sorted out your music collection? Sent emails to those people you have been procrastinating about contacting? Sorted out your insurance for when you accidentally drop your iPod down a drain?

When I really can't sleep I lie in bed in a comfy position and recite the poem Lepanto in my head, syncronising the rhythm of the words with my breathing. Of course that requires knowing Lepanto. Still, slow and steady rhythmic breathing is a great way to put yourself to sleep -- ask anybody who has studied yoga!

And it has held up ever since above the European lances the banner of the mystery of chivalry.

I was going to say, i always keep 'A shropshire lad' on the bedside table, haha, but i'll rephrase that, i find reading a few pages of that particular volume, usually relaxes me enough to sleep. I agree also with Lareine that if you just get into a comfortable position on your back, nice and relaxed and just concentrate on breathing nice and steadily and really just 'notice' your breath, that should help you to fall asleep. I never slept so well as when i did yoga.

2manyhats, if you spend many nights on the internet all night, during college, you're doing 'it' wrong.

I drank like a fish right up until they said those magic words 'academic suspension'
I was a little too tightly wound, due to fun times with the Army, when I started school and I unwound way too fast...

Damn, I've got to think about getting to sleep. I really need to get in to work early tomorrow, being the boss sucks sometimes...

LOL, well, I'll practice falling asleep fast.:D
But seriously, your story means a lot to me. I can relate in many ways.
Hopefully my first year of college won't be a total work load. I just found out today I have met all the necessary requirements for writing to graduate! To quote my counselor, "you are done with writing, period." lol
